Sofia Vergara recently had a sit down with Pablo Motos on the Spanish TV show, El Hormiguero, where she discussed her role as the fun and sassy fan favorite, Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on Modern Family.

Speaking in Spanish, Vergara is explaining to the host that Gloria was her character on the show, that ran from 2009 until 2020.

While she was speaking, she was interrupted by Motos, who asks her (translated from Spanish), “How do you say Modern Family?”

He was referring to the way she pronounces the show’s title in English.

Puzzled, and before firing back, the 51-year-old asks, “How do I say it in English? Did I say it wrong?”

Quickly working out that Motos was attempting to tease her, she calmly replies with her signature wit, “Oh, because you speak better English than me?”

Taking a brief pause and keeping her composure, she then says, “How many Emmys have you been nominated for in the United States?”

After an eruption of laughter in the studio, he says, “only one,” and Vergara quickly shoots back, “Sorry how many?”

Then, she asks how many times he’d been nominated for a Golden Globe.

Killer side

The star of Hot Pursuit has received multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nods for her performance in Modern Family, and on top of her Screen Actors Guild Awards, and People’s Choice Awards, she’s also been named by People as one the top “50 most beautiful people.” And by Hollywood Reporter and Billboard, she was named one of the most influential Latin women in Hollywood.

Not only is she adored for her comedic prowess and natural beauty, she’s also incredibly versatile.

The America’s Got Talent judge, who recently split from her Magic Mike husband Joe Manganiello, is showing fans her grittier side in her next role as the titular character in Griselda, a Netflix miniseries about the notorious Colombian drug lord, Griselda Blanco, who was known as the “Cocaine Godmother.”

Trailers for Griselda, co-produced by Vergara, shows her completely transformed as the savage Colombian queenpin.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight about the ruthless woman who was assassinated in 2012, Vergara says, “There are so many nuances to explore in terms of who she was as a drug lord and, of course, as a woman, as a mother.” She continues, “She was someone who did whatever it took to protect her family…I really wanted to explore that from the point of view of, you know, of her being one of the only women in history to have gone as far as she did.”

For her to play a believable Griselda, Vergara needed some Hollywood magic that included great makeup, and a curly, brown wig resembling Blanco’s signature hairstyle.

“I wanted no one to think of me or my last role,” Vergara said of stepping away from her beloved character on Modern Family. “I wanted to get inside her head and really understand her mentality.”

The six-hour series Griselda comes out on Netflix January 25, 2024.

Sofia Vergara is just brilliant and what a comeback she had with Motos! We really look forward to seeing her showcase her killer side in Griselda!
