Woman thinks service dog takes priority over bride, gets reality check

Every bride and groom deserves to have the wedding of their dreams. For some, that could mean a picturesque venue or the perfect dress. But these details are meaningless if the couple cannot enjoy their special day to the fullest.

A groom recently took to Reddit to share how his effort to ensure his soon-to-be wife’s comfort led to some pretty intense family drama.

The dilemma arose because his sister has a service dog, but his bride-to-be is allergic to dogs. Let’s just say it didn’t end well for everyone involved… Keep reading to find out how he navigated this tricky situation.

The 32-year-old groom explained that he requested his sister to leave her service dog at home due to his 30-year-old fiancée Gemma’s allergies. He wrote: “I (32M) am getting married to my long-term girlfriend Gemma (30F) at the end of November.”

He continued: “Gemma and I are having a small wedding with only close family and friends invited mainly because we don’t want it to be an inconvenience to others and choosing a venue is really hard due to Gemma’s allergy.”

Gemma is not just allergic to dogs but also terrified of them due to a traumatic incident in her childhood, which is when she discovered her allergy. Although her allergy is not life-threatening, it causes significant discomfort. “Even when taking anti-allergies, her face would get significantly swollen, have red marks all over it that are visible even with heavy makeup, and she would constantly sneeze,” he wrote. During the lockdown, using face masks helped her symptoms, but she can’t always wear them indoors as people often assume she is ill.

The groom’s sister, Kate, has diabetes and relies on her service dog, Lenny. “I absolutely adore him and Gemma is not scared of him either,” he noted. However, due to Gemma’s severe allergies, he asked Kate not to bring Lenny to their wedding. “I believe my future wife should be able to enjoy her day without the swelling, which would be hard to avoid due to the venue being quite small and private. Gemma gets the reaction even if there’s a dog in the same supermarket, even if it doesn’t touch her.”

The groom recounted how he brought up the issue with Kate while dropping off parcels for her. Kate reminded him that Lenny is a service animal and it’s not right to ask her to leave him behind. “I told her he is still a dog, and being a service animal doesn’t miraculously cancel my wife’s allergies, and she knew about them from the start. I’m not asking her not to take him to any family get-togethers, just not to our wedding.”

This request led to a significant fallout. “My sister and my mom both called me an a*****e and are not talking to me. They have threatened not to come to the wedding, which I said is fine as I value my wife’s comfort more,” he concluded.

People took to the comments to voice their opinions on the matter, with one user writing: “So whats your sisters solution? Having your future wife suffer at her own wedding? Is this some kind of dominance play? Its true you cant ask someone to not bring a service dog. But you can uninvite your sister.”

They continued: “You have to stick up to your wife and its good you are doing so. I ll predict the future now and say that you’ll have to do that more often later on, because your sister and your mother will blame your wife for choosing her ‘stupid health’ over your sisters dog.”

Someone else added: “I feel for your sister but your future wife has a right to have a wedding and photos without having ‘allergic hive face’!!! For this one time allergies trump service dog.”
