Haunting 911 call released after 21-year-old college student plunged from 8th floor while dancing on sofa

A 21-year-old student fell from a window on the eighth floor of an apartment building in Georgia. Now, a chilling 911 call made in the moments after the devastating fall has emerged, revealing what happened in the aftermath.

Kristin Sargent, 21, a student at the University of Georgia, was in her apartment in the city of Athens when the dramatic accident occurred.

It was on Saturday, September 26, that police and emergency personnel were called to the Rambler Athens apartment complex following reports that a student had fallen from a window on the eighth floor.

When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they found Kristin on the ground near the pool area. According to the police report, she likely struck a metal bench during the fall. The bench’s cushion had blood on it and part of the armrest had broken off.

People who were at the scene told police that Kristin had been dancing on a couch or air mattress before she fell through a window. The police investigation into the accident is still ongoing, but according to police, Kristin is expected to survive.

Father’s update on Kristin Sargent

Her father, Richard Sargent, has since shared an update about his daughter’s condition. He told local TV channel WSB that Kristin is awake and able to talk following the eight-story fall.

The 21-year-old is being treated in the intensive care unit and has sustained multiple injuries. According to her father, the recovery is going better than many could have expected.

“University of Georgia just won a football game,” Richard told the outlet, according to People. “I bet there were a lot of kids here who were 21 years old who were super happy.”

He was referring to thel team’s victory over the Oklahoma Sooners earlier in the day. The father also described his daughter as a fighter and is convinced she will pull through.

“She’s a good fighter, and so she’s going to be okay,” he continued.

Her friend called 911

Richard shared that Kristin herself seemed to have grasped just how incredible it was that she survived the fall. She reportedly said to a friend: “Hey, I’m alive. I can’t believe it.”

A friend that was with Sargent before she fell called 911, and told dispatchers: “We were dancing, and she just fell out of the window. She’s not moving,” according to the New York Post.

In the same call, she said they hade been drinking, but added: “It was nothing extreme at all, we were all fully conscious.”

But Kristin’s friend wasn’t the only person who called 911. Another resident witnessed the fall, and called it in.

“I just saw someone fall out of, like, the eighth-floor window and land on the grass by the pool,” he said.

“They look like they’re unconscious, at least. We heard a noise and looked out and, yeah, it doesn’t look good.”

The apartment complex’s appeal

Following the accident, Rambler Athens sent a message to residents, reminding tenants that the windows in the building are equipped with safety stops.

“As a reminder, windows throughout the community are equipped with safety limiters,” the email statement read, according to a student-run newspaper, The Red & Black. “For your safety, please do not tamper with, remove or disengage these devices. If you have a concern with a window or safety limiter, please contact the management team for assistance.”

The apartment complex also stated that it is cooperating with authorities to find out more about what happened.

“Our thoughts are with the resident and their family,” the complex said, “and we ask that everyone respect their privacy during this time.”
