During the first U.S. date of her Summer Carnival tour, P!nk took a moment out of her high-energy show to pay tribute to Sinéad O’Connor with a beautiful cover of the Irish singer-songwriter’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
P!nk brought opener Brandi Carlile back on stage at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the two performed O’Connor’s hit song in front of a crowd of thousands.
“Can’t think of two mightier women to honor her,” one Twitter user wrote.
O’Connor died Wednesday at age 56.
According to Billboard, before the emotional tribute P!nk shared her connection to O’Connor’s hit song with the audience.
“When I was a little girl, my mom grew up in Atlantic City and I used to go down to the Ocean City Boardwalk with my ten dollars and I would make a demo tape. I would make a little cassette tape and imagine it was my demo for the record company.”
“And it would always be either ‘Greatest Love of All’ by Whitney Houston or ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ by Sinéad O’Connor. So in honor of Sinéad, and in honor of my very, very talented friend, Brandi Carlile, I asked her if she would come out here and sing this song with me.”
“You never know what people are going through,” P!nk said. “It’s not that hard to give people a smile… we’re all learning that lesson together now.”
O’Connor’s family announced her death Wednesday. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad.” No cause of death has been reported.
