Unconventional baby names are nothing new, but one couple’s latest choice has left even fellow fans wondering whether they’ve gone too far.
When Elon Musk introduced the world to son X Æ A-Xii, plenty of people were left scratching their heads over the mythological, tech-inspired name that the child’s mother explained was also a nod to the CIA’s Lockheed A-12 “Archangel” reconnaissance plane.
The billionaire later expanded his famously eccentric brood with daughter Exa Dark Sideræl and son Techno Mechanicus, cementing his reputation for choosing names that are anything but conventional.
And as celebrity parents continue pushing the boundaries, plenty of everyday moms and dads are also getting creative with their own choices.
Fire-breathing Pokémon dragons
For one Pokémon-loving couple, however, baby name inspiration came straight from the Nintendo franchise.
Their unusual choice only recently came to light when a friend shared the story on Reddit, admitting she had no idea what the couple had named their first child until nearly two years after he was born.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Pokémon fan myself, but this is just wrong,” the user wrote.
The Redditor’s friends had named their son Zekrom, a Dragon and Electric-type legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation V and best known as the mascot of Pokémon White.
Zekrom’s baby dragon sister
While the user admitted the name was tame as far as Pokémon names, another revelation left her stunned.
“Now, I know very well that Zekrom is on the milder side of Pokémon names when it comes to that, however, she is having another child – a girl – and wants to name her Reshiram,” she wrote.
In the Pokémon universe, Reshiram is the Dragon and Fire-type counterpart to Zekrom.
That discovery prompted an immediate response.
“Needless to say, I totally yelled at her over text and told her that I could let Zekrom slide since it’s all said and done, but there is no way in hell that she will name her daughter Reshiram,” she added.
‘Those names are cool’
The post quickly caught the attention of fellow Pokémon fans, who found themselves split between admiring the references and wondering how the names would age once the children reached adulthood.
“Could be worse; could be Lechonk,” one person joked. “At least as far as Pokémon Go, those names are cool. They’re still Pokémon, so it’s tragic.”
“Right, like we named one of our cats Koopa Troopa because we were super into Mario when we got her, but we’d never name a human child that,” a second shared.
“There’s so many Pokémon nowadays that I wouldn’t even notice. I’d just assume it was Middle Eastern or maybe one of those weird Mormon names. Now if you name your child Jigglypuff, that’d be a huge issue as everyone under age 40 knows what that is,” shared a third, referring to the “Balloon Pokémon” that’s known for lulling opponents to sleep with its soothing lullaby.
Another suggested there were plenty of Pokémon-inspired names that could work in everyday life: “There are some Pokémon names I think would be cute baby names… these aren’t them.”
‘This is so cringe’
Others online users were less forgiving, suggesting naming a child after a creature in a game is “cringe.”
“Ugh. This is so cringe. Children are not billboards for your fandoms,” one commenter wrote.
“Jesus Tapdancing Christ that’s awful. I love Pokémon, too, but children aren’t accessories for your fandom,” a second shared.
Another added: “Good lord… Sometimes I think people forget that their child is not an accessory. Like, at some point, hopefully if all goes well this child will grow up into a full-fledged adult. A functioning adult within society. And they give the poor kids names like this, or after an anime character or whatever. It’s awful.”
