Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather, 92, is mourning the loss of his beloved wife, Jean Rather.

Jean Rather, a gifted artist and the devoted wife of legendary journalist Dan Rather, has passed away at the age of 89.
Her death, caused by cancer, was announced on Tuesday, November 26, in a heartfelt message shared on Dan Rather’s official Facebook page by close friends.

”Today is the saddest of days for Dan and the extended Rather family,” the post began. ”Jean Rather, Dan’s wife, passed away at their home in Austin, Texas, early this morning. She had been on hospice care for some time, but the news still comes as a shock for those of us who knew and loved her.”
”Jean lived a full life as an incredible wife, mother, friend, and artist — and a true Texan,” the Facebook post added.
Jean, known for her creative talent and warm spirit, spent much of her life nurturing her family while pursuing her passion for art.
Her artwork and vibrant personality left a lasting impression on all who met her. As the wife of Dan Rather, one of America’s most iconic news anchors, Jean stood as a pillar of strength and grace, offering unwavering support throughout his illustrious career.
Grew up in Texas
During a promotional interview for the Netflix documentary Rather, Dan reflected, “In the end, whatever remains of one’s life — family, friends — those are going to be the things for which you’re remembered,” according to AP News.
Jean Rather’s story began in the small town of Smithville, Texas, where she was born as the middle child of three daughters to Martin and Hilda Goebel. From an early age, Jean’s kind spirit and creative soul set her apart. She attended local public schools and, after graduating high school, dove straight into the workforce with determination and drive.
It was at a Houston radio station where fate stepped in, introducing Jean to the love of her life, a young and ambitious Dan Rather. The two quickly formed a bond that blossomed into an extraordinary partnership.
Their shared dreams and deep connection would lead to 67 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and countless adventures. Over the years, Jean and Dan Rather crafted a life together lived i many places across the globe – from Dallas to Washington, D.C., London to New York City, and finally back to the heart of Texas in 2021.
What Dan said about his marriage to Jean
In an interview with People, Dan credited Jean for the strength of their long-lasting marriage. “The first year I was with CBS News, I was home 41 days out of the year… Very hard to hold a marriage and a family together then.” Yet, he fondly remembered Jean saying, “Whatever it takes, we’re going to make it work.”
As a loving mother of two and grandmother of two, Jean filled their lives with joy and care. Whether cheering at games or comforting a scraped knee, she was the heart of the family — not just a matriarch, but also a trusted confidante, devoted cheerleader, and loyal friend.
Her commitment to the arts extended well beyond her own creations. For eight years, Jean served as the Painter Member and Vice Chair of the Art Commission of the City of New York. Jean’s dedication to service also extended to numerous nonprofit organizations. She held esteemed board positions with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, UT Press, and the Harry Ransom Center, demonstrating her unwavering support for education, conservation, and the arts.
Jean is survived by her husband, Dan; son Danjack and his partner, Ann Prunty, along with grandson Martin in New York; daughter Robin and her partner, Mike Marler, along with grandson Andy in Austin; and many beloved members of the extended Wallace, Zimerhanzel, and Rather families.
She also leaves behind countless dear friends whose love and support were a great source of comfort and joy throughout her life.
