Mars is close enough for scientists to study in extraordinary detail, yet distant enough that it still holds plenty of unanswered questions. And while NASA continues searching for clues about Mars’ ancient past, some people have made a much more extraordinary claim; what if Mars was once home to an advanced civilization?
There is no scientific evidence that such a civilization ever existed. But decades ago, a former U.S. Army intelligence officer involved in a controversial government remote-viewing program claimed he had “seen” one.
And now, another man has described a remarkably similar vision.
A Man Called Brady Claims He “Visited” Ancient Mars
A man identified as Brady recently came forward with an account of what he says happened while practicing astral projection. According to his story, he separated his consciousness from his body and “travel” somewhere else.
One of the places he claims to have visited was Mars, and that too roughly one million years in the past.
But what he described wasn’t the barren, dusty world we know today. Brady said he saw a bustling civilization filled with people.
The city, he claimed, looked somewhat like modern-day Dubai, while the surrounding environment reminded him of England on a warm summer day.
He described the inhabitants as unusually tall and thin, with pale or bluish skin. But then everything changed.
According to Brady, a huge celestial object appeared in the sky. People began screaming and running as they realized something catastrophic was approaching.
And then came what he described as an enormous blue wave that swept across the civilization. He claimed the disaster destroyed everything in its path.
Brady’s account is extraordinary. However, it is important to stress that there is no scientific evidence that this happened, or that astral projection can reveal events from Mars’ distant past.
Then There Was The CIA’s 1984 Mars Experiment
Brady isn’t the first person to claim he saw an ancient civilization on Mars.
One of the strangest stories dates back to 1984, when former U.S. Army intelligence officer Joe McMoneagle participated in a remote-viewing session.
The experiment was part of a larger U.S. government effort to investigate whether people could supposedly obtain information about distant locations through psychic perception.
The program was real. The government really did investigate remote viewing, and thousands of related documents were eventually declassified. But the existence of the program doesn’t mean that its extraordinary claims were proven true. The CIA later concluded that remote viewing was too unreliable and inconsistent to be useful for intelligence purposes.
McMoneagle’s 1984 session is what makes the Mars story particularly strange. He was given information identifying the target as:
“The Planet Mars. Time of interest approximately one million BC.”
He was then given geographic coordinates and asked to describe what he perceived.
He Described Pyramids And Strange Figures
According to the declassified transcript, McMoneagle described seeing something resembling a large pyramid or pyramid-like structure sitting inside a huge depression.
He described the structure as high and yellowish, with an ochre-like color.
He also reported seeing what appeared to be carved canyons and other unusual structures. Then his description became even stranger.
McMoneagle claimed he perceived extremely tall, thin figures and suggested that the civilization was somehow disappearing.
He described them as almost like shadows of people who were there, but in a sense were no longer there.
The session also included descriptions of environmental problems, including dust storms and changes to the atmosphere. To believers, the similarities between McMoneagle’s account and Brady’s later description are eerie.
To scientists, however, they’re simply unverified statements recorded during a controversial experiment. The transcript documents what McMoneagle said he perceived; it does not establish that the structures or beings actually existed.
Another Remote Viewer Claimed Martians Survived
McMoneagle wasn’t the only person to make claims about ancient Mars.
Courtney Brown, a political scientist who has written about alleged remote-viewing experiments, has also claimed that Mars once supported a civilization. Brown described the inhabitants as having prominent eyes and delicate bone structures.
He claimed their society was relatively primitive compared with modern Earth but advanced enough for people to live in towns, raise families and participate in communities. And, once again, his story involved a catastrophe.
Brown has claimed that a major disaster devastated the civilization, although he believed some Martians may have survived and escaped elsewhere in the solar system. None of these claims have been confirmed by planetary scientists.
But Mars Really Was Very Different In The Past
Scientists do have evidence that ancient Mars looked dramatically different from the planet we see today. NASA says geological evidence points to a much wetter Martian past, with ancient rivers, lakes and other environments where liquid water once existed.
That means the idea of ancient Mars being dramatically different from today’s barren landscape isn’t science fiction.
But there’s a huge difference between saying Mars once had water and saying it once had intelligent inhabitants.
Scientists have found evidence of ancient environments that could potentially have been suitable for life, but no confirmed evidence of an ancient Martian civilization.
And What About The Famous “Face On Mars”?
The story becomes even more mysterious when you remember one of Mars’ most famous optical illusions.
In 1976, NASA’s Viking 1 spacecraft photographed a formation in the Cydonia region that appeared to resemble a gigantic human face.
The image immediately fueled speculation that Mars had once been home to an intelligent civilization capable of building enormous monuments.
But later, higher-quality images showed something far less mysterious.
NASA explains that the feature is a natural Martian landform, and its face-like appearance was largely the result of lighting and viewing angle.
So Did An Ancient Civilization Really Exist On Mars?
For now, there’s no evidence to support it. The CIA really did investigate remote viewing. McMoneagle really did participate in a documented 1984 session about Mars.
And Mars really did have a wetter and potentially more habitable past. But the leap from those facts to an ancient civilization of tall, blue-skinned Martians destroyed by a mysterious catastrophe is enormous.
Brady’s story may be fascinating. McMoneagle’s declassified transcript may be bizarre. And the similarities between their accounts may certainly make for an intriguing mystery.
