Dolly Parton died a little more than a year after her husband, Carl Dean, passed away. The couple was married for nearly 59 years. Now, new details on how Dolly Parton’s health deteriorated after her husband’s death are coming to light.
In 1964, an 18-year-old Dolly Parton met the man who would become the love of her life outside a laundromat in Nashville, Tennessee. Carl Dean was 21 when he first saw Dolly. And according to Carl, he knew almost immediately that she was the one.
“My first thought was, ‘I’m gonna marry that girl,’” Carl once recalled. “My second thought was, ‘Lord she’s good lookin’.’”
He later added: “That was the day my life began. I wouldn’t trade the last 50 years for nothing on this earth.”
Carl had spotted Dolly from his pickup truck and called out to her. Dolly turned down his date invitation, but she soon invited him over while babysitting her nephew. It was the beginning of a love story that would last for decades.
“He came up every day that week and we sat out on the porch. I wouldn’t even take him in the house,” Dolly later recalled.
Dolly Parton’s marriage to Carl Dean
Just days later, Carl met Dolly’s parents. Dolly said he told her he knew from the moment he saw her that she was the woman he wanted to marry. In May 1966, the couple secretly tied the knot in Ringgold, Georgia.
Dolly’s record label had encouraged her to wait before getting married, worried that marriage could affect her growing career. But Dolly and Carl had other plans. They chose Georgia for their wedding so the Tennessee press would not find out. The ceremony was incredibly small. Dolly, Carl, and Dolly’s mother were the only people there.
Their marriage would go on to become one of country music’s most enduring love stories. Yet Carl was rarely seen beside Dolly at red carpets, award shows or public events.
He attended just one major event with her early in her career, when Dolly received her first songwriting award. Afterward, Carl made it clear that public events simply weren’t for him.
Dolly later recalled him saying: “Dolly, I want you to have everything you want, and I’m happy for you, but don’t you ever ask me to go to another one of them dang things again!”
That was Carl. He preferred a quiet life away from the spotlight while Dolly became one of the biggest stars in the world.
“We have a lot of fun,” Dolly once said of their marriage.
Dolly Parton “took a step back” after the death of her husband
In 2016, after 50 years together, Dolly and Carl renewed their wedding vows and celebrated the remarkable journey they had shared. Sadly, their love story came to an end when Carl Dean died in 2025 at the age of 82.
After his death, Dolly Parton released a statement on her beloved late husband.
“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy,” the statement read.

Nikki Lund, who knew the country music icon through her longtime manager, Donny Nozell, told Page Six that Parton had endured “a lot of loss in a short amount of time.” Not only because of Carl’s death, but also the more recent loss of her brother.
“I think it’s like a broken heart, you know,” Lund, who met Dolly Parton less than a month ago, said. “Normally, she works all the time because she loves it. She’s just a busy bee. She’s always busy. And for the last year, she took a step back from the public eye and wanted to spend more time at home. She wasn’t around anyone as much for the last year.”
“She’s left the world to go live with her real love”
Nikki Lund explained that she was “surprised” when she met Dolly Parton after the death of Carl. She said that she was a very “resilient person,” having “such a faith and such a brightness about her that you just forgot that there were any problems in the world.”
Still, the loss of Carl was “the biggest tragedy loss for her.”
“My mom said it so perfectly …she’s left the world to go live with her real love. It was so beautiful,” Lund told Page Six. “I’m also a little in shock right now. We all knew she was sick, but this was a surprise. I mean, at least to the people that weren’t in her immediate family.”
