Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s courtside date night at Madison Square Garden quickly turned awkward after one small exchange between the superstar couple sent social media into a frenzy.
On May 25, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce sat courtside as the New York Knicks crushed the Cleveland Cavaliers 130-93 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, officially securing the franchise’s first NBA Finals appearance since 1999.
Inside the packed arena, celebrities filled the crowd as Knicks fans celebrated the historic win, including actor Timothée Chalamet, who erupted at the final buzzer while cameras repeatedly cut to 36-year-old Swift and Kelce, also 36.
Hype man
Kelce, a longtime Cleveland sports fan, appeared fully invested in the game despite the Cavaliers’ collapse. The Kansas City Chiefs star was spotted hyping up the crowd, flashing his Cavs shirt and chugging beer.
On the New Heights podcast, hosted by the Kelce brothers, the Chief’s tight end defended his chug when Jason – who plays for the Philadelphia Eagles – teased: “You’re a role model, Travis! You cannot be out there chugging beers in public!”
“It was a classy chug, Jason! I didn’t spill one drop,” he said, per People. “I didn’t crush the can. I’m on the hardwood floor at an NBA game. It could have got messy. It was a smooth, classy chug to get the people going.”
Swift didn’t seem to mind – she mostly laughed along beside him as the two shared several affectionate moments on camera, including a kiss shown on the Madison Square Garden Jumbotron.
But while most attention initially centered on the couple’s courtside chemistry, another quieter interaction soon became the night’s biggest talking point online.
Fans obsessed over brief exchange
At one point during the game, Swift casually reached into her handbag and handed something to Kelce without him even asking, while cameras continued rolling nearby.
Kelce grabbed the item without much reaction, but the brief moment immediately triggered wild speculation across social media, where fans tried to figure out exactly what the multiple Grammy-winning singer had passed him.
“I thought she passed her credit card to him!” one fan wrote in the comment section of an NBA clip showing the couple.
A second joked: “Passing the credit card…‘Honey, why don’t you go buy yourself something shiny. Mama’s got a game to watch.’”
“He’s so kept,” another person added.
Others simply noticed the couple’s interaction altogether.
“Rich people doing stuff,” one social media user commented about the couple, who announced their engagement in August 2025.
‘Fix his bad breath’
As the clip continued circulating online, some fans took a closer look and argued the interaction likely had nothing to do with money at all.
Instead, many became convinced Swift had simply handed Kelce a piece of gum after his very public beer-chugging moments throughout the game.
“This chewing gum she gave him was to fix his bad breath,” one fan suggested.
Another wrote: “mom keeping gum and snacks for baby in her purse.”
A third viewer said the exchange actually made the pair seem even more comfortable together rather than awkward.
“They look like a married couple already, her passing him some gum, it looks like no questions,” the fan wrote.
Although the Knicks’ dominant victory and long-awaited finals appearance created one of the loudest nights Madison Square Garden has seen in decades, many people online still found themselves more focused on one tiny courtside interaction involving a handbag, a mystery item, and a football star who may simply have needed gum after a few beers.
