Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been arrested. The arrest comes four days after Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck for several minutes while repeatedly told the officer he couldn’t breathe.
George Floyd later died. His death sparked an outcry across the nation and led to calls from his family, the mayor of Minneapolis, and around the country.
“Why is the man who killed George Floyd not in jail? If you had done it or I had done it, we would be behind bars right now, and I cannot come up with a good answer to that question,” Mayor Jacob Frey said during a May 27 press conference.
Up until May 29, the officers involved had only been fired from their positions.
According to the Star Tribune, Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington revealed Friday that Chauvin had been taken into custody by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehenson for the death of Floyd.
According to WCCO, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced during a press conference that Chauvin was charged with murder and manslaughter.
“We have now been able to put together the evidence that we need. Even as late as yesterday afternoon, we did not have all that we needed,” he said. “This is by far the fastest that we’ve ever charged a police officer.”
The other officers involved have not been arrested at this time.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the FBI are investigating Floyd’s death.
This is extremely important news that needs to be shared with everyone.
