Still grieving the loss of her beloved stepfather who died in January, Kate Beckinsale spent her mother’s birthday, and Mother’s Day, in a hospital bed.
On March 11, the 50-year-old starlet shared a teary-eyed Instagram post from a hospital, where she expressed love and gratitude to her mom on her special days.
In the post, she writes that she’s “sick,” leaving fans concerned over her current accommodations that she offers no further explanation.

2024 has not been kind to 50-year-old Kate Beckinsale.
In early January, only moments after presenting an award at the Golden Globes, the star of Underworld was seen rushing to the hospital, her sparkly silver gown flying behind her, to be at the side of her dying stepfather.
Beckinsale can be seen in photos, her sheer silvery skirt hitting the ground as she rested in a seat by Roy Battersby, 87, who lay dying in the bed next to her.
“I fought for you with everything I had. Oh Roy I am so sorry I lost,” she penned about the man, who had two forms of cancer and died January 10th after having a massive stroke.
Beckinsale’s biological father Richard Beckinsale died in 1979 at 31 from a heart attack in his sleep and Battersby joined the family in 1997 after he wed her mother, Judy Loe.
Caring for mom and stepdad
According to the Daily Mail, several months ago, Beckinsale flew her mother and Battersby from the UK to her home in Los Angeles, to care for them both.
“Kate has been caring for her parents, who both have serious illnesses, for most of the year,” a source told DailyMail.com late last year. Adding that Loe is keeping her health battles a secret, the person continues, “She brought them to her home in LA and has made looking after them her number one priority.”
The anonymous source also shared that the Pearl Harbor star has been struggling with the loss of Battersby, a British TV director.
“She was spotted this week several times crying in the corridors of UCLA hospital,” the insider said. “Her friends are very concerned that she has been under relentless strain for months and hardly sleeping or eating.”
The source adds, “Kate appears to be very strong but this has been incredibly hard and, given that she lost her father so young, is affecting her very deeply. Her friends are concerned for her own health.”
Adding to her sorrow is the loss of her companion Clive, her 19-year-old cat, who frequently traveled with her.
Mysterious illness
On March 11, life took another strike at the actor, who shared an emotional Instagram post, where she’s seen teary-eyed in a hospital bed.
The post was a loving tribute to her mom, who celebrated her 77th birthday on March 6, and Mother’s Day in the UK, which was on March 10.
In addition to her tearful selfies, Beckinsale shared clips of her mother enjoying cake and champagne, along with images of her dogs. The first photo shows a screenshot of her mother’s text, reading: “I am thrilled out of my brains, oh Kate Kate, what fabulous pressies, thank you so utterly much.”
Beckinsale captioned the gallery of images: “Happy birthday and UK Mother’s Day this last week to my incredible mother. Thank you to those that love us and support us when it’s s**t and try to make sure there are some bits that aren’t.” The post continues, “And for looking after our dogs when we can’t and lead us to remember happy things when we can’t. And turn up when we are sick and sit with us. And send balloons and check in and pull us out of wells with love.”
She adds, “Thank you for loving us, those who do, and for the amazing, kindest Nick, and especially for my mother’s capacity for joy. It is so inspiring and beautiful .Happy everything mama. Your fight for joy despite also welcoming tears is the experience of watching a warrior up close. I love you x”
In all her words of love for Loe, Beckinsale failed to mention the reason for her hospitalization.
Friends and fans concerned
People are terribly concerned for Beckinsale, who in 2019 was hospitalized after suffering a ruptured ovarian cyst.
Sharing photos of herself in a hospital bed, she writes, “Turns out a ruptured ovarian cyst really hurts and morphine makes me cry. So thankful to everyone who looked after me.”
At the time, responding to a fan’s comments, she writes, “It’s actually not a selfie. My mum took it. In fact I would not have posted it if we had not noticed someone in a car taking a photo of me leaving the hospital in a wheelchair.”
She then explains she uses Instagram to share personal information that she chooses to make public. “I’d prefer to say what happened than endure speculation and so I chose to share,” she continued, explaining why she felt obliged to posted the moment. “I agree, it’s not a normal impulse. But it’s not normal to be photographed in vulnerable situations by people you don’t know either.”
Her Instagram post on March 11, where she offers no explanation on her condition, does leave the public speculating.
One fans writes, “Such a sweet post for your Mama. I pray for your recovery, whatever it is you may be going through Kate.”
Others, begging for answers, write, “Are you OK? Why are you in a hospital? Please get Well soon,” and “No context hospital pics don’t sit well with me.”
“And that’s the point… she wants the attention and mystery,” shares another.
