Melissa McCarthy is married to fellow actor Ben Falcone. While the couple is used to being in the spotlight, they try to keep their daughters out of it. But now as their two girls are growing up, they sometimes make an appearance with their parents on the occasional red carpet.
The family recently made an appearance together at an event but instead of celebrating the beautiful family moment, people decided to focus on the family’s weight and looks.
In 2013, McCarthy appeared in the movie Identity Thief, starring alongside Jason Bateman. While the movie did not receive any critical acclaim, some critics went as far as to criticize McCarthy’s appearance and weight.
Veteran film critic Rex Reed called the actress’ character “cacophonous” and “tractor-sized.”
McCarthy was not one to listen to the criticism and not respond back. About peoples’ obsession with her weight, the actress said, “No one’s asking a man, how do you keep your legs in shape? Which I’ve been asked. I think every time we categorize people by weight, by race, by gender, we put them in boxes and its not a good thing for the world.”
When McCarthy lost 50 pounds people were enthralled with her and asked her repeatedly about her weight loss. The actress however was candid in how she had no ‘secrets’ to divulge and how her weight would likely fluctuate.
“I have, but I’ll be back again. I’ll be up, I’ll be down, probably for the rest of my life. The thing is, if that is the most interesting thing about me, I need to go have a lavender farm in Minnesota and give this up. There has to be something more.”
McCarthy has long maintained that questions about her weight and her fascination with her looks are not something she wants to focus on. Despite the constant commentary on her weight and looks, she remains unbothered by it all and stays content in her life.
McCarthy brought along her family to the Little Mermaid premier. She wore a Taller Marmo gown in blue with matching heals and opera-style gloves. The actress plays Ursula in the film.
Her husband Falcone was in a black suit while their younger daughter Georgette wore a black gown with ruffled tiers. Georgette is rarely seen in public hence her accompanying her parents to the premier was something to note.
Their older daughter Vivian was not pictured at the event, though it was reported that she was in attendance as well. “Thunder Force” and “The Boss.’ Vivian is a copy of her mother, and has also followed in her parents’ footsteps by becoming an actor, so far she has appeared with them in Thunder Force and The Boss.
The actress has always been very aware of how ruthless people online can be about looks. She has often commented on how she can take any comment directed at her but her daughters should never be on the receiving end of them.
The 52-year-old actress said, “Give me your best punch in the face, and I’ll take that punch, rather than have my kid feel bad about herself… My message is that as long as everybody’s healthy, enjoy and embrace whatever body type you have.”
She talked about how she encourages her daughters to accept compliments when they are directed toward them. She said, “…I hope it’s one of many ways that I show my girls that it’s okay to like who you are. It’s okay that everybody’s different. I always say to my girls if we were all the same, we would all be robots. You would be bored out of your mind. Hopefully, it’s working.”
Falcone himself is enthralled by his talented wife and never misses an opportunity to praise her. He is the director of “God’s Favorite Idiot,” said of directing his wife for the project, “…I told her, I love you every day. But today, I love you most of all. And it was true. Thanks for watching everyone!”
Falcone is not shy about expressing his love for his wife publicly. On their anniversary in 2021 he posted a picture on Instagram with the caption, “I was lucky enough to marry to the most wonderful person in the world. Happy Anniversary Mooch! Love you. Here’s to 400 more.”
The couple has been married for over 18 years now and have built a beautiful life together.
Their two daughters are now in their teenage years and have become wonderful young women. Melissa McCarthy’s older daughter Vivian Falcone is now 16 years old and is appearing alongside her parents in their projects. “We’ve kind of kept Vivian out of acting, but she’s very good at it. We needed a person to play a 12-year-old Lydia and Vivian is a dead ringer for Melissa at that age,” Ben Falcone said of the casting.
Of course the casting call was made since the young girl looks exactly like her mother! At 16 she has a solid resemblance with her movie star mom.
