To many, it may seem unconventional, but the polygamous way of life was not unfamiliar to Meri Brown. Her father practiced polygamy with five wives, and she has a total of 25 siblings.
Meri first met Kody Brown back in 1989 and it was one of his sisters introduced them. She was 19 years old, he was 22.
Soon after their first meeting, they fell madly in love and Kody, who was raised in a Mormon household, proposed that same year. From the early stages of their relationship, Meri anticipated that Kody would eventually introduce additional wives into the family. And she was fine with that, due to her own background.
As per the Sister Wives fandom, Meri wanted to have eight children with Kody but unfortunately, she faced challenges in conceiving. Throughout their marriage, Meri experienced pregnancy only twice. In 1994, she gave birth to Mariah Lian (now Leon), fulfilling their hopes for expanding the family. Sadly, a subsequent pregnancy around 2007 ended in a miscarriage.
”I completely assumed that after I had Mariah, it would be very easy for me to conceive again,” Meri said at the time. “And that just didn’t happen. So, after years of a rollercoaster, we had finally backed off. … I was so frustrated and so angry. I didn’t understand why, after another 12 years of trying, and then, it was just taken away from us. I didn’t understand that. It was really hard.”
In 1994, Kody entered into a “spiritual marriage” with his third wife, Christine. Two decades later, Kody and Meri filed for divorce so that Kody could get legally married to Robyn and adopt her three children from a previous relationship.

Their relationship faced a massive blow when Meri became the victim of a catfishing scandal in 2015. She had engaged in an online relationship but fell victim to a catfishing scheme involving the person she had a crush on.
It was particularly after this incident that tension escalated, leading to a growing emotional distance between her and Kody. In Sister Wives, Kody said that he could no longer trust his first wife and revealed that he no longer visited her house and had lost the romantic connection they once shared.
”Meri and I have been in a very dark place for a very long time,” Kody said in 2021 and continued:
”It’s been more about trying to get ourselves out of this hole that we dug ourselves into. … I feel like [my wives] need to understand that — that they can leave. If it’s not working for them, they can leave. Nobody’s going to be a prisoner here.”
In January 2023, the couple formally went their separate ways after more than 30 years of marriage.
”After more than a decade of working on our relationship in our own unique ways, we have made the decision to permanently terminate our marriage relationship,” a Meri said in a statement released on her Instagram page.

Kody has expressed his full support for Meri exploring a new romantic connection, and his fourth wife, Robyn, has openly stated that she would be happy for Meri if she were to meet someone new and start a new chapter.

However, the rumor about JD Crawford would turn out to be just that—a rumor. There wasn’t really much evidence to suggest that Meri had a new boyfriend.

“I’m pretty badass, just going to say it,” she told People in 2023 and added: ”And I am very confident and I know what I’m worthy of and I am a very good business person and I know how to create safe boundaries around myself.”

“I’ve been keeping this kind of close to me as we’ve been enjoying the last few months of dating and getting to know each other.”
“As I’ve considered when and how I wanted to share this fun news and share him with the world (jk, not really sharing, I’m keeping him to myself 😉) I knew I wanted to celebrate my birthday in a special way and let you celebrate this with me!”
