Michael Douglas shared one cancer symptom that led to tragic diagnosis linked to oral sex

After experiencing troubling symptoms for almost a year, Michael Douglas received some devastating news – a cancer diagnosis linked to oral sex that was hard to swallow.

For decades, Michael Douglas, 81, has been one of Hollywood’s most recognizable and respected figures. The son of legendary actor Kirk Douglas, he grew up surrounded by the film industry but ultimately built his own reputation through a long list of powerful performances and bold career choices.

From producing the Academy Award-winning One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest to starring in films like Wall Street and Basic Instinct, Douglas carved out a career defined by complex characters and sharp storytelling.

Yet in 2010, the two-time Oscar winner faced a challenge far removed from the spotlight of Hollywood.

‘Walnut-size tumor’

In 2010, Douglas started experiencing pain and discomfort in his mouth and throat, symptoms that gradually intensified and prompted him to seek medical advice from multiple specialists who repeatedly misdiagnosed the symptoms as an infection.

As his symptoms failed to improve, a friend eventually urged him to seek another opinion, leading Douglas to travel to Montreal, Canada to consult a physician who would finally recognize the severity of the problem.

“I will always remember the look on his face,” Douglas told the Guardian of the large lump found in the back of his throat. “He said: ‘We need a biopsy.’ There was a walnut-size tumour at the base of my tongue that no other doctor had seen.”

‘Most common viral” STI

The biopsy confirmed that Douglas had stage four Stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma oral cancer– a rare and life-threatening form of the disease – caused by tobacco, alcohol use and HPV infection.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, HPV is the “most common viral sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States,” with about 14 million new cases each year. It is also increasingly linked to cancers of the throat, particularly in the oropharyngeal region.

“Without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV, which actually comes about from cunnilingus,” Douglas told the Guardian.

‘Seven circles of hell’

The Wonder Boys star immediately started an aggressive seven‑week course of chemotherapy and radiation, that he described as “the seven circles of hell.”

Radiation burned his palate, and although doctors recommended a feeding tube to help him maintain weight, he declined. Instead, he consumed a liquid-only diet and lost around 45 pounds over the course of the treatment.

“That’s a rough ride. That can really take it out of you,” he said in his interview with the Guardian. “Plus, the amount of chemo I was getting, it zaps all the good stuff too. It made me very weak.”

Cancer and son’s incarceration

While undergoing treatment, Douglas was also coping with significant emotional strain, as his son Cameron was serving a sentence of seven years for drug‑related charges.

“I did worry if the stress caused by my son’s incarceration didn’t help trigger it,” he said. Immediately after, he joked that “it’s a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.”

At an awards event later, Douglas addressed the hype his interview with the Guardian had caused: “I never expected to become a poster boy for head and neck cancer, but if answering a few questions opens up discussion and raises awareness, then I’ll stand by that.”

Still, the actor has also been careful to stress that the exact cause of his own cancer is impossible to pinpoint.

“I do not know what caused my particular cancer,” Douglas said, per OncoDaily. “If I did, I’d have a Nobel Prize. I do know that I am here today because of all the incredible advances in cancer research and treatment.”

Retirement

As his health stabilized in the years after treatment, Douglas – who has been in remission since his cancer treatment – slowly reduced his workload, eventually announcing that Looking Through Water, a 2025 film that stars Cameron as his on-screen son – would serve as his final film before retirement.

Reflecting on his career and the toll of balancing acting with producing through his company, Further Films, he told Deadline, “I’m enjoying my hiatus and enjoying my life. It was overwhelming running the production company and acting at the same time.”

He added, “I’ve had a very busy career…I’d been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set.”
