Millions of users around the world are responding to an ad posted by a mother looking for a babysitter, but it’s not the kind of attention she was hoping.

The mother, known only as Tammy, is being slammed by online users who are saying her unreasonable expectations are too high for even Mary Poppins. One cyber citizen says the prospective sitter of her four young children will be “served with a side of slavery.”

A U.S.-based mom is causing quite the stir online after her shocking ad for a babysitter went viral.

Tammy writes in the add that a babysitter is “needed ASAP” to watch her four kids, ages two, three, five, and seven, Mondays to Fridays from noon to 6 p.m., some weekends included.

There is nothing outrageous with her starting plea, it’s what she’s offering to someone who fulfills her irrational list of demands.

  • Must be a great cook and avid cleaner
  • Over 25 years old
  • Minimum education: master’s degree
  • No social media accounts (I don’t need my kids seeing that)
  • No drinking, smoking, not even vaping
  • No tattoos or piercings
  • Need five professional references
  • Background check and drug test will be conducted.

It’s acceptable she lists no drinking or smoking, and a background check along with drug tests, all which should be mandatory for caregivers of young children.

What piqued the ire of online conversations is what Tammy feels is fair compensation.

The ad continues, “This job pays $200 a week (must have own transportation to get to and from while also running all my errands!) Please call Tammy if interested.”

A photo of the ad recently went viral with audiences around the world viewing and commenting on its “ridiculous” content.

“With all due disrespect,” one TikTok user shares in his clip while reviewing Tammy’s requirements. His viral post has been viewed more than 4.6 million times and is still widely circulated.

Commenting on his post, one user writes, “I hope this is some kind of joke – the audacity is unbelievable,” and a second quips, “Not even Mary Poppins fits this list, ridiculous.”

Another shares, “[You] can make almost $200 per day working on McDonald’s for 8 hours.”

According to AI-powered job site Zip Recruiter, the average weekly salary for a babysitter in the United States is $717 per week (as of October 2023), and weekly pay varies on the high end at $971 to as low as $288.

Falling well below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, it’s not surprising people are lashing out over Tammy’s offering.

Some online users suggested Tammy made an error in the salary. “I think she meant $200 per child a week cause [there’s] no way,” writes one, while a second adds, “Maybe there’s a typo? Did she mean $2000 a week?”

A third netizen says the mom needs to be checked: “Noooo it’s a typo..it’s $2000 a week….Tammy also needs a background check.”

A lot of cyber fans took offense with Tammy expecting her candidate to have a master’s degree, that costs students an average of $40,000.

“What person in their right mind goes through stress and tears to get their master’s degree and is able to get a good paying job just to get paid $6 an hour,” writes one.

Another netizen snipes, “Imagine a master’s for $200 a week served with a side of slavery…”

“Now I can go waste my degree,” says a third.

Meanwhile, some international internet users say $200 per week is more than they get paid in their home country. “Lol where I come from lots of people are getting paid 120-250 per month…I would probably take it,” writes one. “In Uganda that is a lot of money,” says another.

Unfortunately, it is not enough money to financially support the high cost of living in North America.

Joshua Owens asks what many of us are thinking, “Has anyone called Tammy yet? LOL just wondering.”

“Nobody is calling Tammy,” answers one person.

What do you think of this story? We agree with her not wanting any substances used around her children but we are really curious to know why she included a master’s degree as a requirement.
