Navarone Garcia has had a long struggle with addiction but has now gotten clean. He is committed to telling his story to set an example for other people who are struggling like him. With the help of Michael DeLeon, the founder of Steered Straight Inc., he is telling his story in interviews.
Despite being a part of a big family in the entertainment industry, Navaron did his best to stay out of the spotlight. In his teenage years, he began using heroin and fentanyl.
“It started with weed in high school and, by the time I was 16, 17, I had kinda tried everything,” Navarone said in a recent interview. “I don’t know if you can say [I became a] casual user of heroin, but I didn’t have a problem with it until 2015. All of a sudden I just noticed a difference.”
He said he went through “insane withdrawals” since at the time he had been using it “two or three times a day.”
“It [got to] where I was using 40 times a day,” he shared of his harrowing journey. “That’s a lot on the body to handle and it became intolerable and unsustainable. I actually checked myself into a rehab and the first thing they do when you go to rehab is drug test you. I said, ‘I just shot up in the bathroom and I’m gonna be positive for cocaine and heroin,’ and they came back and said, ‘You actually tested negative for heroin.'”
The 37-year-old is a musician and while you might not have heard of him, you have surely hear of his mother Priscilla Presley and half-sister Lisa Marie Presley. He was born to Priscilla when she was with computer programmer Marco Garibaldi.
Navarone had a 20 year age difference with his sister Lisa and despite that they still managed to have a relationship. He said, “I think every family has sibling rivalry or, you know, they don’t always agree, and that was just kind of brought to the forefront with our family. We also had great times together, but our struggles were definitely brought to the forefront.”
“It’s just funny because [Lisa Marie] and I, you know, had been struggling sometimes with the same thing at the same time,” he reflected. “It was never like we ever used together — we’d always do everything separate — but not even realize that we were both struggling with the same thing at the same time.”
Despite their own struggles, they had a relationship with one another. Navarone recalled the day of his sister’s funeral. “Somebody sent me a picture from the sky in Alabama that day… and it literally looked like there was an angel that has my sister’s face made out of the clouds,” he said.
As for his relationship with his mother, Navarone shared that him and Priscilla share a very close bond. He shared how his addiction was incredibly intense and in 2015 he was shooting heroin up to ’40 times a day.’ He had not even realized that for a majority of those times he had been using fentanyl, according to a test.
“That’s a lot on the body to handle, and it became intolerable and unsustainable,” he admitted. “I would try to keep it from her, you know, what I was going through, but after a week of withdrawals alone I’d [call and say], ‘Mom, I’m a week into it, but I got to come to your house, and I’m going to be there for another 2 weeks’ and she says, ‘OK. You need some soup?'”
