Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jeff Beck passes away at age 78 from meningitis

Jeff Beck was perhaps one of the most prolific guitarists of his generation. He made tunes that people still love and listen to today. The news of his sudden death has not only come as a shock to many fans but also his family…

Jeff Beck was well known for his musical prowess. The guitarist was an eight-time Grammy nominee, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice as well. He was known as a member of the Yardbirds and later on his own works through the Jeff Beck Group.

Contemporaries such as the Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell had nothing but praise for Beck. He had the distinct honor of being Number Five on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists.

“Jeff Beck has the combination of brilliant technique with personality. It’s like he’s saying, ‘I’m Jeff Beck. I’m right here. And you can’t ignore me.’ Even in the Yardbirds, he had a tone that was melodic but in-your-face – bright, urgent, and edgy, but sweet at the same time. You could tell he was a serious player, and he was going for it. He was not holding back,” Campbell said.

Just last year Beck had been touring with actor and singer Johnny Depp. The duo even recorded an album together titled 18.

The fact that he had been so active even last year is what shocked people to learn of his sudden death. The statement his family released on his death read, “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing.”

It continued, “After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”
