Rosalynn Carter celebrates 96th birthday at home with former president and peanut butter ice cream

Rosalynn Carter turns 96 on Friday and will celebrate her birthday at her home in Plains, Georgia with her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, and other family members.

According to the Carter Center, the former first lady plans to have a quiet celebration, one that will involve cupcakes, peanut butter ice cream, and butterflies.

Earlier this year the Carter family announced Rosalynn had been diagnosed with dementia. The announcement came only a few months after Jimmy Carter, 98, made the decision to enter hospice care at home.

As the couple has aged, their celebrations have become quieter and more private.

Along with enjoying cupcakes and peanut butter ice cream, an homage to their past lives as peanut farmers, the Carters will release several monarch butterflies in her garden.

Rosalynn, a longtime advocate for the conservation of monarch butterflies, launched a butterfly garden at her childhood home in Plains in 2013.

It became the first stop on the The Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail, a network butterfly friendly parks and gardens around the United States. Today there are more than 1,400 private and public gardens around the world that are part of the trail.

The couple celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary in July making them the longest-married US presidential couple, and in October Jimmy Carter will turn 99.
