A surprise twist has come to light in the case of the dad who was shot dead while collecting his son from daycare last week.
On September 30, 36-year-old Carl Morgan was fatally shot in a carjacking while picking his son up from a daycare on Canal Street, New Orleans.
Cops revealed that alleged gunman Raymond Wells, 21, drove off in Carl’s car following the shooting, leaving Carl and his young son, Silas, in the daycare’s parking lot.
Silas was fortunately unharmed, as were the other children at the daycare, with an eyewitness telling WVUE that teachers quickly ushered the little ones back inside the daycare facility after hearing the gunshot.
In a shock twist issued by the authorities, it was revealed that suspected gunman Wells was discovered just 15 minutes after the alleged carjacking, suffering from his own gunshot wound inside the stolen car.
Carl Morgan’s stolen vehicle had rolled to a stop on Interstate 10 in Metairie, where Wells was found unresponsive inside.

NOPD Deputy Chief Nicholas Gernon last week told how Wells had sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was in hospital in “extremely grave condition”.
If he managed to survive the ordeal, Wells would promptly be charged with first-degree murder, Gernon explained.
Yesterday, October 5, Deputy Chief Gernon provided an update that confirmed Wells had succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
Wells was allegedly seen breaking into cars shortly before coming into contact with Carl. The deputy chief said that authorities are now trying to determine if anyone may have shot back at Wells after he fired at them during the time in which he was trying to steal a vehicle.
Carl, meanwhile, a sous chef in New Orleans, has been praised by those who knew him.
French Quarter restaurant Brennan’s wrote on Instagram: “Carl’s senseless and untimely death is heartbreaking.
“Carl was a devoted father, loving partner, cherished son, and friend to all. His remarkable talent, positive energy, and immeasurable impact will be sorely missed at Brennan’s.”
At the time of writing, a GoFundMe page established to support Carl’s partner, Lisa, and their son, Silas, has raised over $48,000.
“He brought heat, hustle, and heart to everything he touched — from the food he created to the people he loved. Carl was known for his fierce passion, his edge, and his loyalty,” the fundraiser reads.
“We lost our friend far too soon. The shock still hasn’t faded. Losing someone with that kind of energy and presence leaves a hole you can feel. He wasn’t just a chef — he was a force. He pushed, inspired, mentored, and made every kitchen feel alive.”
