Stepmother accused of starving autistic teen daughter to 35 pounds faces possible life sentence

A Wisconsin woman has been convicted after her 14-year-old autistic stepdaughter was found starving to death at just 35 pounds, exposing years of horrific abuse hidden inside a family trailer home.

On Aug. 21, 2025, Walter Goodman called 911 from the family’s trailer in Wisconsin after his 14-year-old daughter reportedly stopped eating, drifted in and out of consciousness and spent days vomiting while barely responding to anyone around her.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by  Fox 11, Walter told dispatchers the teen –listed as MJG in the report – had not eaten in “four to five days” and appeared increasingly “lethargic.”

“She’s just like laying there like she’s comatose but she’s – her eyes are open and she’s moaning and she’s throwing her arms around,” Goodman told dispatchers, according to the complaint filed in Outagamie County, Wisconsin.

When the dispatcher asked if the girl was in pain, Walter allegedly replied: “I don’t know – she won’t even talk. She’s just laying there with her eyes open all creepy.”

‘Severely underweight and malnourished’

The first officer to reach the trailer later described a scene investigators say they would never forget, People reports.

The girl “appeared severely underweight and malnourished and that her collar bone, rib cage, hip, and cheek bones were very prominent.” Officers also said “she looked to be the size of a 6 to 8-year-old child.”

Goodman claimed that she had last seen a doctor less than two years ago but “he stopped care due to the doctor being ‘weird.’” He added he hadn’t taken her to be checked again “because she was healthy.”

List of illnesses

But, when she was taken to hospital, a different story was exposed – despite a long list of life-threatening medical problems, there had been “no medical records for the last five years.”

In addition to weighing just 35 pounds, the teen was reportedly suffering from untreated diabetes, acute respiratory failure, cardiac dysfunction, pancreatitis, severe hepatitis, hypothermia and dangerously low blood sugar levels.

Hospital staff also described a teenager so physically weak she relied on walls and door handles to support herself while walking to the bathroom – she also “required assistance to press sink buttons to turn water on.”

One of the nurses said the MJG’s “eyes lit up as she started listing off all the options of food she could have over the course of her hospitalization.” She then said her dad would be “so mad,” because “he really doesn’t like when l eat that much.”

As detectives started piecing together what life inside the trailer allegedly looked like, the case grew even more disturbing.

‘Slap her a** again’

After executing a search warrant on Melissa’s cellphone, investigators allegedly discovered text messages threatening MJG, who was frequently referred to as “dummy,” or “stupid.”

Police also reportedly uncovered photographs showing the girl lying on a bare floor wearing little more than socks and underwear.

Other messages cited in the complaint appeared to support physical abuse. In one exchange, Melissa said “That’s fine” after hearing the teenager had been beaten with a belt for “taking more than one bite at a time,” while another message instructed Melissa’s daughter, Savannah LeFever, to “slap her a** again.”

Hadn’t played outside in years

Then investigators made another chilling discovery. While searching the home, police found a bolt lock with long screws that “matched the screw holes” of the teenager’s bedroom door.

When MGJ While recovering in the hospital, the girl reportedly told investigators she believed she last “played outside when she was 10 or 12 years old.”

Stepmom convicted

On May 6, 2026, Fox 11 reports that Melissa became the first person convicted in the shocking child neglect case after entering pleas tied to the abuse of her teenage stepdaughter.

The woman pleaded no contest to charges including chronic neglect causing great bodily harm, chronic neglect causing emotional damage and false imprisonment.

Her sentencing is scheduled for July 1.

The sprawling case still isn’t over. Three other adults – including the teen’s father, LeFever and her partner Kayla Stemler – are facing charges in the alleged abuse and isolation prosecutors say unfolded inside the family’s Wisconsin trailer home.
