Actor Treat Williams who was best known for “Hair” and Steven Spielberg’s “1941,” passed away recently at the age of 71 years old in a tragic accident. The news was confirmed to the media by his agent of 15 years Barry McPherson.
Treat Williams was born Richard Treat Williams in Rowayton, Connecticut. He then went to college and studied theater, after which he moved to New York. In New York he got the role of John Travolta’s understudy for Danny Zuko for “Grease.”
The actor’s acting credits show his versatility as a performer. He landed a role in director Milos Forman’s adaptation of the musical “Hair” in 1979. After this he worked with A-list director, Sidney Lumet in his crime drama “Prince of the City.“
The actor worked in several popular television movies including the television adaptation for “A Streetcar Named Desire.” He also got parts in TV movies where he played boxer Jack Dempsey and FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover.
His career was having a bit of a revival lately as the actor scored major roles in network television shows. He appeared in the CW series “Everwood” for four seasons after which he appeared in “Chicago Fire.” He also one of the staples in the show “Chesapeake Shores,” appearing in 53 episodes between 2016 and 2022. He also starred in the HBO miniseries “We Own This City,” produced by David Simon on the chronicle of corruption and internal politics in the Baltimore police department. His last credited role is in the HBO hit series Blue Bloods.
The actor passed away in a tragic motorcycle accident on June 12, 2023. His agent said in a statement, “He was an actor’s actor. Filmmakers loved him. He’s been the heart of Hollywood since the late 1970s. He was really proud of his performance this year. He’s been so happy with the work that I got him. He’s had a balanced career.”
According to authorities, the car that hit Treat Williams did not see him approaching. The identity of the actor was not made known at the time of the accident and was only later revealed.
After the news of his passing, his family revealed a heartbreaking statement which read, “Treat was full of love for his family, for his life and for his craft, and was truly at the top of his game in all of it. It is all so shocking right now, but please know that Treat was dearly and deeply loved and respected by his family and everyone who knew him. We are beyond devastated and ask that you respect our privacy as we deal with our grief.”
Treat would often share images of his family. The actor was a dedicated family man who was not afraid to show his affection for his family. On June 6, 2023 he shared a picture of his daughter Ellie, writing in the caption that he missed his daughter.
The last posts he shared were showing how he found happiness in the simplest of things. He shared pictures of freshly mown grounds with the caption, “There is no better smell than new mown hay.”
The second post was a video from the same scene. It showed someone riding a lawn mower over the grass. In the caption, Treat wrote, “Hay day.” After the news of his death came to light, fans flooded the comments with their condolences.
Now new information is coming to light. A witness at the scene of the accident has come forward. Vermont resident Matt Rapphahn who owns an auto repair shop near the scene of the accident, said he saw the entire thing unfold.
“I ran over to [Treat], and then I ran back to the shop and called 911,” Rapphahn shares, he said the driver of the vehicle got out of his car to “console” 71-year-old Williams.
“It was hard to tell [it was Treat] with the helmet on,” he says, “but [the driver] knows him — knew him — and he was saying, ‘Oh, my God, it’s Treat.’”
Rapphahn says when emergency services came to the scene Treat was
“conscious and verbal.” He added, “Emergency services were asking him questions.” However Rapphahn says, “he was in a great deal of pain.”
“But they had to get him onto the backboard to get him onto the stretcher and then onto the ambulance,” he recalls. Williams is said to have sustained “critical injuries,” and was airlifted to a hospital in Albany, New York, where he was pronounced dead.
His daughter Ellie took to social media to share the pain she was feeling. She shared pictures of her late father and wrote in the caption, “This is a pain I have never felt. I am absolutely shattered,” she continued, “Thank you to everyone who has sent messages and kept our family in your hearts during this terrible heartbreak.”
