Newscaster Julie Chin is an Emmy-winning journalist, and her bright smile is recognized all across America. With years of experience under her belt, she was always a pro at delivering the news.

Until one day, when the Tulsa NBC affiliate was delivering a segment about NASA’s canceled Artemis-I launch and was unable to finish her own sentences. She began stuttering which shocked her considering she was a professional.

She tried to carry on but found that she couldn’t, which prompted her to be upfront with her viewers and say, “I’m sorry, something is going on with me this morning, and I apologize to everybody.”

She handed over the broadcast to her colleague and meteorologist, Annie Brown. Her colleague graciously took over, while commenting, “we all have those days,” to comfort her coworker. However, what was happening to Chin was not normal at all or the result of a “bad day.”

Her coworkers called emergency services, and when Chin arrived at the hospital, medical professionals said it was the right thing to do because Chin had just experienced the beginnings of a stroke. She did not return to the channel after the incident, but to update worried fans she took to Facebook to post an update about her health.

Her statement read, “I’m so glad to tell you I’m OK. The past few days are still a little bit of a mystery … Some of you witnessed [the incident] firsthand, and I’m so sorry that happened.”

First of all: Thank you. The prayers. The concern. The messages. The texts. The emails. The calls. I’m so…

She went on to explain what exactly had happened on the day of her broadcast. She revealed that she had felt great when she got into the studio but during the broadcast lost vision in one eye and experienced numbness in her hand and arm.

When she could not comprehend or read the words on the teleprompter, she knew it was serious and she needed medical attention. She recalled how badly she wanted to continue her segment but was unable to, remarking that anyone who had seen the segment would know.

She underwent some testing, but everything looked good with her healthwise. “I’ve spent the last few days in the hospital undergoing all sorts of tests. I’m thankful for the emergency responders and medical professionals who have shared their expertise, hearts, and smiles with me,” she wrote, as she thanked her friends, family, doctors, and community.

After her health scare, she learned about the acronym “BE FAST,” used to determine if someone is suffering from a stroke. The acronym stands for Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, and Time.

This means you need to be on the lookout for loss of balance, changes in your vision, facial drooping, arms drifting downwards arms, slurring speech, and if all or most of these are true, you need to immediately call an ambulance.

She thanked everyone for their support as she recovered and promised that she would be back in the studio in no time at all.

While Chin’s experience with her stroke was quite scary not just for her but for her viewers as well. It is a good reminder to always be vigilant about your health.
