USDA sounds warning that Cyclospora parasite could be in salads and wraps across the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a public health alert due to wraps contaminated with the Cyclospora parasite.

On July 30, USDA released a statement stating: “The beef, pork, and poultry salad and wrap products were distributed by Caito Foods LLC.”

Popular stores across the U.S., including Kroger, Walgreens and Trader Joe’s have been selling the beef, pork and poultry salad and wrap products, according to reports, meaning that a large number of people are potentially at risk.

According to USDA, the affected products have the establishment number “EST. 39985 or P-39985” inside or next to the USDA mark of inspection.

Cyclospora

USDA says that the Cyclospora infection is an illness caused by the intestinal parasite, Cycospora cayetanensis. The incubation period for the infection ranges from two to 14 days, with illnesses likely having not been reported yet due to the time it takes between when a person falls ill and when they report said illness.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators and that consumers may be at risk due to the length of the Cyclospora incubation period. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them.

“These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Caito Foods LLC and FSIS are working together to remove the products from commerce,” the official statement reads.

One thing is for certain; Cyclospora sounds like something you certainly don’t want to catch. Help us spread this message around America to prevent the spread of any possible infection!
