A former public school teacher has pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 U.S. midterms, becoming the first Democrat in nearly four decades to win a U.S. Senate seat in Texas.
Now, James Talarico is heading to Washington after defeating Republican Ken Paxton in a fiercely contested race that drew personal attacks from President Donald Trump and enormous spending by Elon Musk.
“Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time,” Musk shared on X after the Democrats swept Trump’s Republicans in the midterms.
‘Tonight we defeated Goliath’
The 37-year-old former middle school teacher celebrated his historic victory before cheering supporters in Austin, where he turned to the biblical story of David and Goliath to describe his unlikely triumph.
“In this race we went up against our own Goliaths: the richest…most powerful man in the world and the entire Washington, DC establishment,” he told supporters, according to the Independent. “Tonight we defeated Goliath.”
His victory delivered a major blow to Republicans in a state they have dominated for decades, particularly after Trump repeatedly targeted Talarico during the campaign, even mocking him with the nickname “Talafreako.”
Yet behind the cowboy boots and political headlines is a story that started far from Washington.
James Talarico’s background: From teacher to senator
Born in Round Rock, Texas, in 1989, Talarico was raised by his mother – a “preacher’s daughter” – after she escaped an abusive relationship with his biological father.
“Like my students, my mom was a fighter. And she passed that fighting spirit along to me,” he wrote on his website.
His childhood, he said, helped shape his determination to stand up for others, a commitment he later carried into the classroom of a school in “one of the poorest zip codes in Texas.”
“Every day, my students struggled heroically to overcome poverty and systems designed to hold them back. Growing up, I saw that same fight in my mother,” he added.
Then in 2018, he entered politics, winning a Texas House district Trump had carried two years earlier, and went on to study at seminary while building a reputation as a progressive Christian who speaks openly about his faith.
“Who is James Talarico’s girlfriend, Brianna Menard?
Away from politics, Talarico shares his life with longtime girlfriend Brianna Menard, who previously worked as his chief of staff.
Their professional relationship eventually became romantic, and Menard left his office to pursue other opportunities, according to People.
During an appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show, Talarico described Menard as his “rock.”
“I don’t know if I could have gotten through the last six months of this crazy race if she hadn’t been by my side,” he said on the podcast, explaining that she was “very supportive,” but did not “want any part of” the controversial campaign.
“What I’m trying to do is protect her and my family and my friends from the impacts of this race, because I signed up to run for the U.S. Senate. Obviously, they did not,” he told Kern Lima.
