Reports are now strongly disputing any tension between Netflix and Meghan Markle following claims of a communication breakdown at the top.
In a Variety article, three unnamed sources alleged that Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has grown “fed up” with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Two insiders claimed Sarandos recently remarked he would not join a call with Meghan unless a lawyer was present, though it remains unclear whether he was serious.
Those claims, however, have been firmly denied. A Netflix spokesperson told Variety the allegations are “absolutely inaccurate.”
Meghan Markle’s attorney, Michael J. Kump, stated: “This is blatantly false. In fact, Meghan texts and speaks with Mr. Sarandos regularly, and has been to his home, sans lawyers.”
“We’ve really enjoyed working with Harry and Meghan”
Netflix insiders also pushed back on the narrative, saying Sarandos and his wife, Nicole Avant, are on good terms with the Sussexes and frequently spend time with them. The couples are also neighbors in Montecito, California. A separate source told Page Six that the couple has a strong working relationship with Sarandos.
The Variety report also pointed to potential strain elsewhere at Netflix. Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria has allegedly “grown weary” of the company’s deal with the couple, but Bajaria herself offered a more positive assessment.
“Archewell has been a thoughtful and collaborative partner, and we’ve really enjoyed working with Harry and Meghan,” she told Variety, according to Page Six.
“They’re deeply engaged in the storytelling process and bring a unique, global perspective that aligns with the kinds of impactful projects our members respond to,” she added.
Deal with Netflix
The Sussexes first signed a reported $100 million deal with Netflix in 2020. Page Six reported that a new agreement reached last August is worth less than the original.
Earlier this month, Netflix ended its relationship with Markle’s lifestyle brand, As Ever, after canceling her series “With Love, Meghan,” which had been used to promote the brand following declining ratings.
The Sussexes continue to work with Netflix through their production company, Archewell Productions. A source told Page Six the deal remains in a “great place,” with multiple projects in development.
