Nyah Huston, US Olympic skateboarder, won his bronze medal July 29 at the start of the 2024 Paris games, but less than two weeks later it already looks like “it went to war and back.”
The 29-year-old showed off the questionable condition of his bronze medal in a series of clips on his Instagram Stories.
“Alright, so these Olympic medals look great when they’re brand new,” the Olympic athlete said. “But after letting it sit on my skin with some sweat for a little bit and letting my friends wear it over the weekend,” he continued before flipping the camera around to show his medal.
“They’re apparently not as high quality as you’d think,” he said as he showed off the medal’s fading color. “It’s looking rough.”
“I don’t know, Olympic medals, we gotta step up the quality a little bit.”
While the medal’s front showed some discoloration, the backside showed significant signs of wear and tear.
“Medal looking like it went to war and back,” the skateboarder added.
Once news began to spread about the condition of Huston’s medal, organizers of the Paris Olympics announced they would replace any medals that showed damage.
“Paris 2024 is aware of a social media report from an athlete whose medal is showing damage a few days after it was awarded,” a spokesperson told Mail Sport.
“Paris 2024 is working closely with the Monnaie de Paris, the institution tasked with the production and quality control of the medals, and together with the National Olympic Committee of the athlete concerned, in order to appraise the medal to understand the circumstances and cause of the damage.”
