iPhone’s new alarm feature guarantees better wake up

The new iOS 26.4 update for the iPhone has an alarm feature quietly added to stop you from ever sleeping in again.

Apple’s latest iOS update could be a game-changer for people who constantly sleep through their alarms. Especially for those who wear their Apple Watch to bed.

Many Apple Watch users already rely on the device overnight for sleep tracking, heart rate monitoring, and health data collection through the watch’s built-in sensors.

And when paired with Apple’s Sleep Schedule feature, the watch can gently wake users with wrist vibrations instead of blasting a traditional alarm from their phone.

For many people, that quieter wake-up experience is a major perk.

The haptic vibrations feel less jarring than a loud alarm tone, and they’re much less likely to wake a sleeping partner, roommate, or baby nearby.

But there’s always been one obvious downside: sometimes the vibrations just aren’t enough.

That’s where the new iOS 26.4 update comes in.

With the update installed, users who sleep while wearing an Apple Watch can now have alarms play simultaneously from both the watch and the iPhone.

In practice, that means you’ll still get the familiar wrist vibrations—but now your phone can also sound an audible alarm at the same time for a much stronger wake-up call.

There is one catch, though: the feature is not enabled automatically.

Users will need to manually turn it on in settings.

To install the update itself, users can head to:

Settings → General → Software Update

After updating, the alarm feature can be activated through either the Health app or the Clock app.

Option 1:

  • Open the Health app
  • Tap Browse → Sleep
  • Select Full Schedule & Options
  • Edit your sleep schedule
  • Toggle on “Always Play on iPhone”

Option 2:

  • Open the Clock app
  • Go to the Alarm tab
  • Edit your Sleep Schedule alarm
  • Turn on the toggle

The option will only appear if:

  • You already have a Sleep Schedule set up
  • Your Apple Watch is paired to your iPhone

Apple users are also being advised to double-check a few settings before relying on the feature entirely.

Focus modes, mute settings, or Bluetooth audio routing could interfere with whether the iPhone actually plays the alarm sound properly.

Technology writer Ryan Christoffel from 9to5Mac said the update addresses a frustration longtime Apple Watch users have dealt with for years.

“Alarms are one of my favorite Apple Watch features, and the thing that got me sleeping with a Watch before sleep tracking and sleep scores were a thing,” Ryan Christoffel wrote.

“When you wear an Apple Watch to bed, alarms set on your iPhone will by default only trigger on your Watch.”

He explained why the system worked well in some situations—but not all.

“My Apple Watch is almost always in silent mode, so alarms set off a series of haptic vibrations. This is fantastic when sleeping next to a partner, or if there are kids asleep nearby that I don’t want to wake.”

At the same time, he admitted the quieter approach can backfire for heavy sleepers.

“But if you need a more forceful wake-up, the Apple Watch taking over alarms may not be a good thing.”

Fortunately, Apple finally appears to be addressing that complaint directly.

“Thankfully though, Apple now finally offers a solution. If you sleep with Apple Watch and need a loud iPhone alarm to get woken up, this one’s for you.”
