Before you permanently mark your body with a design that captures your interest, it’s strongly urged that you do your research and understand the message your tattoo is sharing.
Unfortunately, social media influencer Brittany Lewin failed to do her research, and was mortified to learn the meaning behind her fruity tattoo.
Brittany Lewin might not the “boss babe” she thinks she is–at least not in the environment she wishes to be, according to the message delivered by her tattoo.
On her left arm, Lewin has a tattoo of a pineapple, the bottom framed by a triangle, and when her arm is propped up, as it frequently is in her TikTok posts, the pineapple appears upside down.
“It’s meant to represent being a boss babe and the triangle is my lucky symbol,” Lewin, of Queensland, Australia, explained on TikTok.
As it turns out, her pineapple is not a lucky symbol for the married Aussie.
She might not have learned its real meaning if one user hadn’t messaged, asking her “is that an upside down pineapple?”
Lewin replied, “Hahaha not when my arm is down.”
But it was that conversation that inspired some long overdue research, which resulted in her now viral post: “I’ve made a mistake besties.”
Lewin discovered the real meaning of an upside-down pineapple, and the page that can be seen in her post describes the inverted fruit as: “Pineapples are used as a secret way for swingers to identify each other. If you see someone wearing an upside-down pineapple badge or pin, it means that they’re actively looking for a partner swap. An upside-down pineapple on someone’s front porch can be seen as an invitation to join a swinger party.”
Horrified and amused by her slipup, Lewin fielded comments from her fans, many shocked over the symbolism, some puzzled that she didn’t know what it meant. “And it’s upside down when your arms are up–how did you not know EXACTLY what you were doing?”
Others revealed they also had similar tattoos, and some assumed she knew its meaning and without judging, said “each to their own.”
“I always thought you and James were just into some extra fun stuff lol I’m sad that you didn’t actually know,” one user writes, referring to her hopes of an invitation from Lewin and her husband, James. “I’m literally sad. Luckily I never messaged you guys.”
Another TikTok user explained to Lewin that “any pineapples in front of people’s homes are also swingers. Be warned, unless you’re a swinger or want people to think you’re a swinger, don’t get an upside-down pineapple tattoo, and don’t put pineapples in front of your home.”
One person argues to not twist the meaning of the tropical fruit, a symbol of Hawaaii: “It means what it means to each person, I learned that it meant, you will always have a friend here. Hawaii sets the meaning, it’s where they grow. We can say what we want but it doesn’t mean it’s the truth.”
A few days after Lewin learned the message behind the fruit permanently inked on her arm, she posted another TikTok video, where she appears to be on the phone making a consultation appointment for a tattoo removal.
One user asks, “are you really removing it?” To which Lewin replies, “nah hahaha.”
Tattoos aren’t like a piece of clothing that you can exchange for a different size or color. If you’re getting a tattoo because it means something to you, or because you’re drawn to the design, do your research and make sure you find out if there’s any real symbolism linked to the artwork. And, if you’re getting a foreign language inked to your body, consult with a translator, because what you thought means “friendship,” may be botched into “friend boat,” and that is the best case scenario.
