Barron Trump is not only a product of Donald Trump and his American heritage, but he’s also Slovenia on his mother’s side. Since he grew up very close to Melania and her parents, it was hardly a surprise that he began to speak like her when he was young. It turned out Barron had a Slovenian accent, which seemed to come as quite a shock to many.
Fast-forward to 2024, and Barron has been through plenty. He grew up with a father who was the real estate mogul of New York City, and later became the first boy to live at the White House since JFK Jr.
After the 2020 White House exit, Barron and his parents relocated to their Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. Now, the 18-year-old son of the former and future president has once again moved.
Barron is back in the Big Apple, where he has enrolled at the famous Stern Business School at New York University. There, he’s reportedly quite a “ladies’ man.” But during all the recent years, he has barely been heard speaking — until now. When Barron met UFC President Dana White during his father’s presidential campaign, it turned out that his accent had shifted a lot since his childhood.
Barron‘s life has been far from that of any normal child. He was born March 20, 2006, in New York City, and much of his childhood was spent growing up in Trump Tower in Manhattan. There, he was said to have an entire floor to himself.
It should come as no surprise that Donald Trump’s net worth is staggering, and as a result, Barron grew up in a world of luxury. Speaking with Parenting, mother Melania revealed that Barron loved planes and helicopters as a young child. She always made sure to cook his breakfast and lunch. Even though they had a luxurious lifestyle, they didn’t have a traditional nanny.
“Barron is 9 years old. He needs somebody as a parent there, so I am with him all the time. As you know my husband is traveling all the time,” Melania said in a 2015 People Magazine interview. “We keep it down to a minimum. If you have too much help, you don’t get to know your children.”
Barron Trump’s childhood in New York City
Melania revealed that Barron was into creating things as a young boy, and was said to even draw on the walls.
“In his space, the décor style of the rest of our home is mixed with what he is into: planes and helicopters,” Melania told Parenting, as quoted by Metro. “We let him be creative; let his imagination fly and do whatever he wants. Whatever he wants to do with his own room later on, he can do it. Whatever he wants to do with his own room he can do it. He draws on the walls, we can paint it over.”
“When he was smaller, he started drawing on the walls,” she added. “His imagination is growing and important. He draws on the walls in his playroom, we can paint it over. One day he was playing bakery and he wrote ‘Barron’s Bakery’ on the wall with crayons. He is very creative, if you say to a child ‘no, no, no,’ where does the creativity go?”
Growing up, it was Melania who was closest to Barron. Donald naturally worked a lot, and he explained to Larry King in 2005 that he was a reasonably hands-off parent. He said he was “not going to be doing the diapers” and might “never even see the kids.”
All the same, Barron loves spending time with his dad. When Barron was growing up, Melania ensured that he got quality time with his father, and the two often went out for dinner together. As he grew older, Barron also joined his father on the golf course.
“It’s very important to know the person you’re with. And we know our roles,” Melania explained.
Barron Trump spoke with a Slovenian accent as a child
Ever since he was a child, Barron’s mother has helped him with his homework. He loved science and math, and Melania took him to different activities after school, encouraging him to reach for the stars.
“He wants to be a golfer, a businessman, a pilot. It’s that age when you introduce him to stuff,” she says.
Melania Trump is, of course, of Slovenian descent. Because of that, she raised Barron to be bilingual, and when he called his grandparents in Slovenia, he spoke Slovenian. Both she and Donald agree that the more languages one speaks, the better, and at one point, Melania revealed he spoke three languages. His father told Larry King that he ‘loved’ Barron speaking with a Slovenian accent, and on a few occasions, the world even got to hear him.
Videos of a young Barron speaking with a Slovenian accent resurfaced after Donald Trump’s 2024 Presidential Election win. Entertainment Tonight shared a video of Barron speaking with his mother in 2009 when he was about to turn three. Barron was heard saying, “I like to play drums,” his mother added, “He loves to play drums, so maybe for his birthday, you will get the present?”
Another clip of a young Barron speaking with an accent resurfaced from the 2010 Larry King interview his parents did. The young boy appeared in his father’s office, saying, “I like my suitcase:”
Melania’s Slovenian heritage has always been present in Barron’s life. Sadly, the boy lost his grandmother, Melania’s mother Amalija, in January 2024, and the entire Trump family attended the funeral to say their last goodbyes.
Barron Trump has changed his accent and fans are left stunned
In a September sit-down with Fox News, Melania discussed her mother’s death, revealing that Amailja and Barron had a very close relationship. In fact, she said her mother moved to the United States just to be close to Barron.
“Her life was incredible in Slovenia,” Melania said. “Once Barron was born, he was her focus. It’s almost like she was a second mother, especially because of my schedule in the White House and being so busy. They had an incredible bond. Her and Barron, it was [a] relationship like no other,” Melania concluded during the segment.”
Barron has barely been seen in public since the White House days. During the four years following the Trump family’s 2020 exit from Washington, the son of the ex-president has only been spotted a handful of times, for example, at his high school graduation.
However, when his father won the election in November, Barron appeared on stage beside him. In a clip where he and his father met UFC President Dana White, his fans heard him speak for the first time in years. And it was quite a shock hearing it – as his Slovenian accent had disappeared.
“Hello. How are you? Very nice to meet you,” Barron said.
The video, posted on X, spread worldwide, and fans quickly commented on Barron and his voice.
“First time I’ve ever heard Barron talk,” one comment on the video read, as per NY Post.
“Barron has his Dad’s speech cadence!” a second user added.
A third claimed, “Sounds like Timothée Chalamet,” and a fourth commented on Barron’s interaction with Dana White, saying he is “such a gentleman.
Barron Trump won’t be living in a dorm room at New York University, Melania says
At just 18, Barron has already had the experience of living at the White House. He graduated from Oxbridge Academy, a private high school in Palm Beach, Florida, earlier this year, and for the first time in many years, the son of the 47th President of the United States won’t be living in the same city as his father.
In September, Barron started classes at Stern Business School at New York University, meaning he has returned to his childhood home of Trump Tower.
Secret Service agents escort him to and from classes, but even though his father is returning to the White House for four more years, Melania is not. It’s been reported that she will not be living full-time at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, though will still perform her duties as First Lady.
Instead, she will also reside in Florida, but perhaps most likely in New York – the better to be close to Barron. During his entire childhood and teenage years, Melania has been a protective guardian of her son, shielding him from the media and supporting him in his school work.
And that won’t change just because he is now enrolled at university. Several sources tell People Magazine that Melania “will do everything she can” to support Barron’s well-being and that he is getting good grades. But the odds of her visiting any dorm are low.
“Living in a dorm in a college town isn’t in the stars for him at this point,” a source told People. “Barron already has his own political ideas. It all needs to be monitored in light of the situation.”
“She tries to normalize his life”
Another source told the news outlet that living at home is Barron’s best option now.
“Whether or not others think he is capable of being on his own, Melania feels it’s better to be around him as much as possible,” that source said. “I see that continuing.”
Melania’s reason for being close to her son does not only involve supporting him in his early days at NYU. Two other sources told People Magazine that his father’s return to the White House as President of the United States has played a part.
“Melania worries about the hate in the country and how it falls on her son, who is innocent of any of this,” the source said. “She is and has been a good sounding board for him. They talk about life as it is and how they are in the spotlight,” the source adds. “She tries to normalize his life. If that is even possible.”
“Any child in the world spotlight like this would be lucky to have a parent so willing to give her time to help keep his life running smoothly,” a Palm Beach source told the outlet.
Another unnamed source stated: “She wants to encourage him to make friends, be super careful of the haters which can be anywhere — especially on college campuses these days — and keep him mentally healthy by having open communication with him and the rest of her immediate family.”
Melania Trump says she is “very proud” of Barron
Melania has not spoken too much about her son and how life is progressing for him. However, in the September interview with Fox News, the former and future first lady praised Barron.
“He’s a grown young man. I’m very proud of him – about his knowledge, even about politics, and giving advice to his father. He brought in so many young people. He knows his generation,” Melania told Fox, going on to speak about his decision to live at Trump Tower.
“It was his decision to come here that he wants to be in New York and study in New York and live in his home, and I respect that,” Melania said, adding, “I hope he will have a great experience because his life is very different than any other 18, 19-year-old child.”
