Emma Heming Willis reveals heartbreaking reason she and Bruce Willis are now living apart

For decades, Bruce Willis was the unstoppable hero of Hollywood blockbusters. Today, as the actor grows more lost in the disease that’s stealing his mind, his wife has revealed that she had to make “one of the hardest decisions” of her life.

Bruce Willis, who turns 71 on March 19, stepped away from acting in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, a neurological condition that affects communication.

When his family shared the news publicly, they explained that the disorder was making it increasingly difficult for the star of The Sixth Sense to continue working – bringing an abrupt end to one of Hollywood’s most adored stars.

Then, less than a year later, came an even more devastating update. In February 2023, the family revealed that Willis’ condition had progressed to frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a degenerative brain disease that affects language, behavior, and personality.

First signs

For Emma Heming Willis, 47, the changes in her husband were subtle at first.

Speaking about the early days before the diagnosis, she recalled noticing that something felt different about her husband.

“For someone who is very talkative and very engaged, he was just a little more quiet,” she told Diane Sawyer on an episode of Good Morning America.

As time went on, the differences became harder to ignore.

“When the family would get together, he would kind of just melt a little bit,” she explained. “It felt a little removed, very cold, not like Bruce, who was very warm and affectionate. To go in the complete opposite of that was alarming and scary.”

When doctors finally delivered the diagnosis, the moment was overwhelming.

“To leave there…with nothing, just nothing, with a diagnosis I couldn’t pronounce,” Heming Willis recalled. “I didn’t understand what it was. I was so panicked. And I just remember hearing it and just not hearing anything else. It was like I was free falling.”

Turning pain into advocacy

In the years since the star’s diagnosis, Heming Willis has channeled much of her energy into raising awareness about dementia and supporting caregivers who are navigating similar experiences.

Earlier this year, she accepted the Susan Newhouse & Si Newhouse Award of Hope at The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration’s Hope Rising Benefit in New York on behalf of both herself and her husband.

During the event, she also announced the creation of the Emma & Bruce Willis Fund for Dementia Research and Caregiver Support.

Behind the advocacy work, however, the family has also been navigating the difficult realities of the disease at home.

Living apart

As Willis’ condition progressed, the family was forced to make difficult decisions about how best to balance his care with the needs of their children, daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11.

In her interview with Sawyer, Heming Willis revealed that the star of Die Hard now lives in a nearby one-story home staffed with professional caregivers.

“We’re there a lot,” Emma says, adding she has breakfast with her husband every morning. “It’s our second home, so the girls have their things there.”

“It is, you know, a house that is filled with love and warmth and care and laughter. It’s been beautiful to see that, to see how many of Bruce’s friends continue to show up for him, you know, they bring in life and fun.”

For Heming Willis, however, the decision to live separately was not easy.

“It was one of the hardest decisions that I’ve had to make so far,” she said. “I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters. He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.”

‘Twinkle in his eye’

The arrangement, she explained, allows them to care for Willis while also creating a stable environment for their children as they grow up.

“Bruce is still very mobile,” Emma says elsewhere in the interview. “Bruce is in really great health, overall, it’s just his brain that is failing him.”

“The language is going, and, you know, we’ve learned to adapt,” she adds. “We have a way of communicating with him, which is just a different, a different way.”

During the interview, Sawyer asked Heming Willis if there are still moments when she sees flashes of the man she once knew.

“We get moments,” she responded. “It’s his laugh, right? Like, he has such, like, a hearty laugh. And, you know, sometimes you’ll see that twinkle in his eye, or that smirk, and, you know, I just get, like, transported.”

“And it’s just hard to see, because as quickly as those moments appear, then it goes. It’s hard. But I’m grateful. I’m grateful that my husband is still very much here,” she added.
