American soccer fans have come under fire online after viewers noticed an unusual sight in the stands during England’s final World Cup warm-up match.
The incident happened on June 10 when England faced Costa Rica in Orlando, Florida. Thomas Tuchel’s side secured a comfortable 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Declan Rice, Anthony Gordon and Ollie Watkins.
Somewhat surprising, it was what unfolded in the crowd that ended up being a hot topic.
As Rice prepared to take a corner during the first half, television cameras captured spectators sitting around tables and eating meals in the stands. The setup looked more like a restaurant or picnic area than a traditional soccer crowd.
Fans react online
The images quickly spread across social media, where many football supporters expressed disbelief.
One viewer described it as the ‘weirdest thing’ they had ever seen at a soccer match, while others argued that the scene felt completely at odds with the atmosphere typically associated with the sport.
In many parts of Europe and South America, soccer culture is built around packed stands, chanting supporters and intense crowd involvement throughout the match. Seeing fans calmly eating at tables while the game was underway struck some viewers as unusual.
“At a f***ing stadium there’s a round table and they’re eating! Not even inside the box!! Naaaah! This is not it!”
Others, however, pointed out that many American stadiums feature hospitality sections and dining areas that are common at sporting events across the United States.
The discussion comes as the 2026 FIFA World Cup officially gets underway across North America. The tournament is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, with matches taking place across all three countries.
