Adam Driver responds with grace to harsh comments about his appearance

A recent interview that aired on the MAX series, Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, has caught a lot of people’s attention. Not only are people talking about the host, Chris Wallace, but they’re also discussing the guest, Adam Driver and the way he handled the awkward interview.

Driver, 40, sat down with CNN’s Wallace to discuss his new film, Ferrari. During their discussion, the journalist took it upon himself to ask Driver whether his appearance helped or hindered him when it came to Hollywood.

The actor was, understandably, taken aback, as was his fans.

Wallace first suggested Driver was comparable to Al Pacino and Jack Nicholson, which Driver took as a compliment.

“That’s very nice. Those are the actors that made me want to be an actor, so that’s a nice comparison,” Driver said before downplaying the comparison to the Hollywood legends. “The New Yorker has also called me a horse-face.”

“I remember reading one reviewer [who said], ‘His agent probably doesn’t know whether to put him in a movie or the Kentucky Derby.’ So if you believe the good thing, you have to believe the bad thing. So I try to not absorb anything.”

Wallace then took the opportunity to question Driver’s apperance.

“Well, that leads me to the next question I wanted to ask you, which is [that] you don’t look like the typical movie star. Has that been a help or a hindrance?”

After appearing taken aback for a few seconds, Driver responded with grace.

“I’ve worked consistently, which is nice, with people I always dreamed that I wanted to work with,” Driver said. “I look how I look. I can’t change that. So, I guess it helped me.”

“A hindrance in only breaking mirrors wherever I go, and having a misshapen outsized body that I can’t fit through doorways or most clothes or fit into most cars, so apart from that, it’s good,” the actor quipped.

Seemingly unsatisfied with Driver’s response, Wallace continued to pursue the topic, asking the House of Gucci star if things would be different if he looked like Robert Redford.

“Yeah, but it would just be different. I would be giving something off…” he said. “Maybe I’m trying to be diplomatic. And I guess if I was alone in a room, I’m like, ‘Who Doesn’t want to look like Robert Redford?'”

“I just kind of accepted this is how I look,” Driver added.

Criticism was swift. As soon as a clip of the interview hit the internet, many labeled Wallace “tasteless,” “cruel,” and “rude.”

“In the year 2023, we don’t need to be talking about people’s bodies or perceived attraction which is SUBJECTIVE for all. We just don’t have to even go there! We all look how we look!” one person wrote.
