The British Royal Family have long carried themselves with an almost otherworldly aura.
Even disregarding the fact that they appear to live extremely long and healthy lives – we don’t know what goes on behind doors, of course – the members of the royal household are shrouded in a mystique very much of their own making.
In centuries gone by, it was to their advantage that the common man genuinely believed that the Royal Family was superior to him not just in social standing, but in terms of physicality, spirituality and just about any other ‘ality’ you want to use.
These days, of course, we know better. The royals, though undoubtedly beholden to traditions the vast majority of us will never have to consider, and virtually locked into lives none of them ever got to choose, are just like us.
As such, they’re as fallible as any other human when it comes to scandals; as vulnerable as any other when it comes to injury. Perhaps more so, on the first point, since the more senior royals spend almost every waking moment of their lives under some sort of spotlight.
When it comes to sustaining injuries, you can be sure that there’s much and more we – the public – are never privy to where the royals are concerned. The veneer of perfection is something the royal household strives to maintain, and only so much slips through the curtain to the media, regardless of how many people are out there claiming to be ‘royal experts’.
Of course, on occasion, there occur incidents that are simply too big to keep under wraps. Take the injury to the royal heir himself, Prince William, for example, that left him requiring surgery and gave him a scar that he will carry for the rest of his life …
It’s safe to assume the past few weeks have been a trying time for the senior members of the Royal Family, Prince William included.
The passing of Queen Elizabeth marked the end not just of a reign, but of an entire era. The subsequent reshuffle within her family has seen Prince Charles become King Charles, and of course, William become the heir apparent.
William, his wife Kate Middleton, and their three children recently moved from Kensington Palace to Adelaide Cottage, located just 10 minutes from Windsor Castle. Despite the move, Kensington Palace will remain their official residence and workspace, and will continue to house their staff.
Indeed, it makes sense to assume that the couple will try to keep things as close to normal for their children, despite the fact that William is now heir to the British throne, and young Prince George one step behind him.
A source close to the royals described the last number of weeks as a very “tense” time, especially for Kate.
“Things were very tense that week; it was not exactly the settling-in period they had hoped for,” the source told People.
“They [Kate and Wills] love that the kids can go out on their bikes and cycle around the estate, and they are all really excited to meet everyone. It’s a real little community.”
Just what the future might hold for Prince William is anyone’s guess. How and when he will ascend the British throne remains to be seen, though it’s a relatively safe prediction that he won’t have to wait even half as long as his father did before becoming King.
Born the first son of Charles and the late Princess Diana, William has been groomed for the role of monarch his entire life. Yet, if reports are to be believed, there was a time – though extremely brief – that those plans were under vague threat.
Fans may not know it, but William suffered an injury involving a golf club when he was younger, and ended up with a fractured skull.

Hello Magazine state that the incident took place at William’s Wokingham school in 1991, and saw the future king hit in the head by a golf club while playing with friends.
William was rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where he had surgery that lasted 70 minutes and was forced to stay overnight.
Princess Diana, William’s mother, spent the night with her son, while his brother, Prince Harry, was his first visitor the next day. King Charles, meanwhile, visited his son after the injury and kept in touch with doctors while he was at the opera.
Speaking on the incident that could easily have been far more serious than it was, William said: “I got hit by a golf club when I was playing golf with a friend of mine.
“We were on a putting green and the next thing you know there was a seven-iron and it came out of nowhere and it hit me in the head.”
The prince also compared the scar he bears to the one sported by Harry Potter.
“It glows sometimes and some people notice it – other times they don’t notice it at all.”
I don’t know about you, but I think Prince William’s going to make a wonderful King one day.
