Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s son Maddox makes major name change

Years after their highly publicized divorce, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s family story is still unfolding – and this time, their oldest son, Maddox, is making a change that’s hard to overlook.

When Brad Pitt, 62, and Angelina Jolie, 50, first locked eyes on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, they set the entertainment world on fire. Fast-forward more than two decades, and what was once a picture-perfect family has unraveled into one of the most bitter and heartbreaking celebrity custody battles of all time.

At the center of it all is a harrowing 2016 private jet flight that seems to have shattered Pitt’s relationship with his children forever.

Flight that crashed the family

In 2022, Jolie filed a lawsuit against her ex alleging abusive behavior during a 2016 private flight from France to California that preceded their 2019 divorce.

According to the New York Times, the filing claimed that “Pitt choked one of the children and struck another in the face” and “grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her.” It also alleged that the star of Fight Club “poured beer on Jolie,” and then “poured beer and red wine on the children.”

Pitt’s legal team has consistently denied the allegations and maintained his innocence.

Shiloh drops Pitt

As the former couple’s legal disputes continued, subtle but significant shifts began appearing among their children – particularly when it came to their surnames.

Over the past year and a half, several of the Jolie-Pitt children have dropped “Pitt” from their public identities. Shiloh, 19, legally changed her name from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Jolie following a court ruling that allowed the modification.

In 2024, shortly after Shiloh – then 18 – chose to drop her father’s surname, an anonymous source told People that Pitt was “aware and upset.”

“The reminders that he’s lost his children, is of course not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them. It’s very sad,” the insider shared.

The situation only got worse for the 62-year-old star of Legends of the Fall.

The same year, Zahara, 21, introduced herself as Zahara Marley Jolie at a college event, omitting “Pitt,” and Vivienne has been credited professionally as Vivienne Jolie. That leaves Pax, 22, and Vivienne’s twin, Knox, 17, as the only two siblings who have not publicly made a similar adjustment, People reports.

Now, Maddox appears to have followed the same path.

Maddox debuts new name

The 24-year-old, who was adopted by Jolie in 2002, recently worked as an assistant director on his mother’s new film Couture, which recently debuted in French theaters. While his involvement behind the scenes drew attention, it was the film’s end credits that sparked renewed curiosity.

Instead of being listed as Maddox Jolie-Pitt – the surname he has previously used in professional credits, including when he worked as a production assistant on the 2024 biopic Maria – he appeared under a shortened name.

The change marks a notable shift for the eldest of the six siblings, who has largely stayed out of the spotlight compared to his parents but has increasingly stepped into creative roles alongside his mother. Unlike Shiloh’s formal legal name change, it remains unclear whether Maddox has taken legal steps or if the alteration reflects a professional preference.

Children continue to evolve

As the Jolie-Pitt family continues to redefine itself years after the divorce, the evolving surnames of their children suggest a quiet but visible distancing from their father’s last name.

While neither Pitt nor Jolie has publicly addressed Maddox’s latest credit change, the pattern among the siblings has become increasingly clear.

For a family long accustomed to public scrutiny, even a single name in a film’s closing credits can speak volumes.
