‘Lady A’ singer Charles Kelley receives tragic, incurable diagnosis

Lady A singer Charles Kelley has revealed he is battling an incurable blood cancer at just 45, but the country star says he feels “really hopeful” about the fight ahead.

Charles Kelley has spent two decades performing alongside Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood as part of Lady A, the country trio formerly known as Lady Antebellum that found crossover success with its signature hit “Need You Now.”

The song carried Kelley, now 45, and his bandmates far beyond country radio, winning Song and Record of the Year at the 2011 Grammys. Kelley also built a career outside Lady A that included the Grammy-nominated song “The Driver” with Dierks Bentley and Eric Paslay.

But in 2022, Kelley – the brother-in-law of Katherine Heigl, best known for Grey’s Anatomy – stepped away from the stage as he faced a much more personal struggle.

‘The reason that I got sober’

Lady A postponed its Request Line Tour while the singer entered treatment for alcohol addiction, starting a sobriety journey Kelley has since shared openly with fans.

“I could go on about the many blessings that have come from putting it down way more than looking healthier, but it’s a nice reminder of a place I don’t wanna go back to,” Kelley wrote while celebrating his sobriety earlier this year.

One of the people beside him throughout that transformation has been his wife, Cassie, whom he married in 2009.

“She’s the reason that I got sober,” Kelley told People in 2025. “She had so much grace for me and went along through the journey with me doing all the work, and I could go so far as to say there’s no way she would’ve stayed with me if I had not gotten sober.”

Now Kelley and Cassie are facing another frightening chapter together.

Cancer diagnosis

On Sept. 29, the singer revealed that he has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare type of white blood cell cancer that the Mayo Clinic explains “can be treated, but it is not considered curable.”

“I had a couple of random rib fractures that happened, which sparked my doctor to having me do several different blood tests,” Kelley explained in an Instagram video announcing his diagnosis.

Those tests ultimately revealed the blood cancer, but Kelley said the lessons he learned through sobriety are already shaping the way he is approaching treatment.

“In sobriety, it’s all about one day at a time and that we’re not in control and so that’s the way we’re looking at it,” he said, explaining that advances in treatment have given him reason to look ahead with optimism.

“I’m young, I feel healthy and the treatments, I will say, have just come so far even in the past five years, even life expectancy far exceeds what it used to be,” he said, adding, “I feel really hopeful.”

‘I’ll have tough days’

Rather than retreating from public life, Kelley said he plans to continue working during the first six months of treatment, including performing with Lady A.

“I believe it’s not going to be too super invasive. I can still work,” he said. “I think, physically, I will feel like myself. I’ll have tough days, but you know, I want to keep working.”

That determination comes with another priority, however, as Kelley looks to spend as much time as possible with Cassie and their sons, Ward, 10, and Archer, who recently celebrated his first birthday.

“I need to be happy and doing what I love to do and spending and soaking up as much time with my family as I can as well,” Kelley said. “But I’m hopeful. I really am.”

“But we just wanted to let you all know and I’ll try to let you in when I feel like it’s appropriate throughout the journey. It’s just another hurdle and I feel confident that we’re gonna get through it,” he said.

‘We got this’

Sharing the diagnosis publicly was another lesson Kelley carried with him from his recovery, where speaking openly helps take “the power away” from the struggle.

“I think in the same spirit of the way we’ve kind of shared a lot of my sobriety journey, just getting this stuff off your chest is so freeing, and it takes the power away from it a little bit that we wanted to let y’all know what was going on,” he told fans.

Cassie, sitting beside her husband in the video, said they were “thankful for a great care team” and the “really great doctors” treating him in Nashville.

“We got this,” Kelley added after sharing a kiss with his wife.
