The concept of altruism is often considered as something that does not exist. But then there are people who show up as examples of the term because their actions truly embody its meaning.

It was early morning in their quiet Texas town as Marine-turned-firefighter Daniel Gaskey made his way to the local gas station to grab his morning cup of coffee. His day had started as usual, and everything seemed to be going as normal.
As he went to the cash register to pay for his purchase, he was suddenly face to face with a scary situation. Gaskey saw a masked intruder with a menacing hunting knife approach the register. The intruder then forcefully shoved him to the side. The robber then looked at the cashier and demanded, in no uncertain terms, “Just give me the money.”
What the intruder did not know was that he had inadvertently put himself face-to-face with a trained former marine. Gaskey called on his knowledge of how to handle a high-pressure situation and immediately sprang to action.
He quickly grabbed the assailant from behind with a decisive move, then locked his arms around his neck as he wrestled him to the ground.
Gaskey then kept the robber pinned down until law enforcement arrived to deal with him. “Sometimes there’s a job that needs to get done,” Daniel said of his actions later. “You have to be willing to stand up and help each other.”
While his friends and family have now come to expect this sort of bravery from him, Mansfield’s Fire Chief wanted to make sure he knew how exceptional his actions were. After he saw the video, he said, “I saw the video for the first time this morning, and I went, ‘This wasn’t just, ‘I’ll hang on until the police get here.’ He intervened and made a difference in someone’s life.”
Gaskey’s actions show the spectacular training that U.S. Marines go through. His brave actions shed light on the spirit of many men and women who have served their country and continue to serve their communities with profound dedication.
