Groom secretly plans for wedding day ink, bride finds out and cancels ceremony

Only days before the big day, a bride-to-be called off her wedding when she heard from a family member that her fiancé was secretly pushing for some wedding day ink.

At the last minute, the would-be groom contacted his tattoo artist cousin, an out-of state wedding guest, insisting he permanently paint on him the “artwork” requested on the gift registry.

But when the man’s fiancée learned about his “stupid idea,” she was furious.

Looking for advice from the online population, a man shared his story on the ‘Am I the A**hole’ subreddit, detailing an unfortunate situation with his cousin and bride-to-be.

Offering some background information, the original poster (OP) – a tattoo artist with his own studio – explains that him and his family were preparing for an out-of-state family wedding in mid-June 2024.

The week before the wedding, the OP writes his un-inked cousin, who he calls Matt, texted him “out of the blue,” saying he would tattoo him on his wedding day.

Unprepared to board a plane with his equipment, including the machine, needles, color, hygiene materials and stencils, the author shares he tried to explain to the future groom why he couldn’t do it.

But the groom-to-be wouldn’t let it go. “[Matt] said he had planned on this and that it would mean a lot to him to both get a tattoo on his wedding day and that I’d be the one to tattoo him. Remember that this is the first time I’m hearing this.”

The OP then texted his cousin again, saying: “I don’t feel comfortable with that and that it’s quite short notice as I work until me and my brother fly over to attend the wedding and a tattoo needs to be designed first.”

But his text was left on read and Matt did not respond.

Family intervention

The next morning, the OP’s aunt interjected.

“She was furious… she asked why I couldn’t pull my s*** together and just tattoo Matt. I told her what I’ve previously told Matt as well, but she didn’t [want to] hear it…[She said] it could be my wedding gift, then she hung up.”

But the author already had a wedding gift, an oil painting he spent several days designing, fulfilling the “artwork” request included in the registry.

The man then hoped to get some support from his brother but “he just shrugged it off and said, ‘it would be nice of you [though].’”

Before asking Redditors, “AITA for refusing to tattoo at my cousins wedding?” the user writes, “I’m unsure what to do now, as I said I’m not really comfortable with the whole situation…I never had to travel – let alone get on a plane – with my equipment. But is that just selfish?”

‘Unpaid prop’

The majority of Redditors supported the OP, agreeing that he’s “NTA.”

“Completely ridiculous to expect OP to arrange all this in one week, and as a gift…Matt probably looked for artists near the venue and found none willing/cheap,” shares one user.

A second netizen writes, “it’s going to turn into a tattoo party and OP is not [going to] be a guest for the wedding, they are going to be an unpaid prop giving out tattoos as party favors.”

A third offers, “I risked my equipment and the health of other people (liability) by unexpected traveling with my gear and then tattooing someone at a location that wasn’t sanitary.”

Two days later, the poster offered users a shocking update on his situation.

Being responsible, the man reached out to Becky, the bride-to-be, and asked about her fiancé’s request.

“She seemed surprised as she apparently had heard from my aunt that I made them something for their new house. She assumed it would be a painting since I’m the artist of the family…I confirmed that.”

He also confirmed that “[Matt’s] request is not a good idea for many reasons.”

“She agreed with me immediately (I think she does have tattoos), she thanked me for telling her as no one else did. Becky seemed really mad, but she seemed to pull herself together. (I would’ve lost it).”

‘Stupid idea’

Apparently she did lose it.

A few hours later, there was a new message from Becky in the family group chat.

It read: “There will be no ceremony on [June 13th] as Matt and I decided we aren’t getting married. Matt and I have things to figure out so please text or call us tomorrow if you have questions, for the rest of the day we’ll be on flight mode.”

Shortly after the text, Becky called the OP and said it “was a stupid idea of [Matt].”

At the time, Matt and Becky had not officially separated, but she was leaving the home to stay with her sister.

“My call must’ve been the last straw but as far as I am concerned Becky is handling it gracefully and Matt will be okay too, I’m sure,” he writes.
