Hayden Panettiere spent the final years of her life carrying grief that never truly went away. She mourned the sudden death of her younger brother, Jansen, wrestled with guilt over whether she could have done more, and fought to rebuild her relationship with her daughter.
Now, following her own sudden death at 36, the deeply personal things she shared about her family are taking on an especially heartbreaking meaning.
Panettiere and her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, grew up together in the spotlight, with both siblings entering the entertainment industry as children. While Hayden became an international star through Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, Jansen forged his own path as an actor and artist.
His final television role came in 2019, when he appeared as Casper, a member of the Hilltop Colony, on The Walking Dead. Away from acting, however, painting became one of the most important forms of expression in his life.
A brother she never stopped mourning
Just weeks before his death, Jansen shared a lighthearted glimpse of the siblings’ relationship. In January 2023, he posted a photograph of Hayden cutting his hair, joking, “Not the first haircut she’s tried to give me.”
It would become one of the last public glimpses of the siblings together.
Jansen died in February 2023 at just 28 years old. His sudden death devastated his family. In a statement, the Panettiere family remembered him for his warmth, creativity and distinctive personality.
“Jansen’s heart could be seen in his eyes, and his charm in his brilliant, engaging smile; his soul in his masterful and revealing paintings, and the joy of life in his dry wit,” they said.

They added: “His charisma, warmth, compassion for others, and his creative spirit will live forever in our hearts and in the hearts of all whom he encountered.”
His death was attributed to cardiomegaly, or an enlarged heart, together with aortic valve complications.
For Hayden, however, the loss was something she continued to carry.
Two years later, she marked the anniversary of Jansen’s death with an emotional tribute, writing, “2 years ago today, I lost my little brother. This amazing human being touched the lives of so many. Especially mine.”
She continued:
”The pain isn’t quantifiable. I pray you’re in a beautiful place, J. That you’re at peace and that when all is said and done…I’ll see you again. Rest easy, brother. You are so missed and beyond loved. 💜”
She later described Jansen as “a remarkable human being” who was “wise beyond his years” and operated at “a higher spiritual level than anyone I’ve ever met.”
“I love you to infinity and beyond, J, and we will be together again one day,” she wrote.
The guilt Hayden carried
When Hayden began discussing her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she admitted that writing about Jansen was among the most difficult parts.
She spoke openly about the guilt she felt as his older sister, saying:
“It’s all the time. It just evolves, especially with a sibling and being the older sibling. You’re just riddled with guilt that you didn’t do your job.”
Hayden revealed that Jansen had struggled with substance abuse and that she had tried to help him, including encouraging treatment and staying in contact with his therapist.

But she eventually came to understand a painful truth.
“I, of all people, should have understood,” she said, before acknowledging: “You can’t help somebody who doesn’t want to help themselves. It’s just a sad fact.”
His artwork became one of the ways she continued to feel connected to him.
“He was an incredible artist,” she told E!. “My favorite thing that I have is his paintings. I feel like he’s so alive in those paintings, like that part of him is immortalized because of the part of himself that he put into his art.”
Fighting to rebuild her own life
Jansen’s death came after years in which Hayden had publicly confronted her own struggles with addiction, postpartum depression and anxiety.
While speaking about her memoir, she pushed back against the idea that treatment had simply been forced upon her.
“The misconception is that I have been in the past forced into treatment when, in fact, I have been the one who sought it out, saying, ‘I desperately need help. I don’t, you know, I know this is going to look terrible, but I cannot live like this anymore.’”
She also spoke at length about her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.
The decision for Kaya to live primarily in Europe was one of the most painful chapters of Hayden’s life. At the time, she was struggling with her mental health and postpartum depression and was trying to recover.
“I was struggling with mental health and anxiety and the postpartum and having to act my way through it and just feeling like I completely lost myself,” she explained.
Reason she gave up custody of daughter
Initially, she said, the decision was extremely difficult.
“When that first happened, I did not have a good reaction to it. I went like [a] mother lion. I would have burnt the world down for my child,” Hayden recalled.
But as she became healthier, her perspective changed. She said Kaya had established a happy life in Europe surrounded by family, friends and activities.
“So by the time I finally got healthy, I felt like it would have been unfair of me and selfish of me to try to pull her away from this life that she had been created,” she said.
Hayden emphasized that she remained deeply involved in her daughter’s life.
“I know in my heart that she feels supported. I have an incredible relationship with her. I go, I travel as much as I can. I see her. I do spend a lot of time on FaceTime with her,” she said.

She added:
“We talk about really deep things. We have a really intense, incredible bond and I’m very grateful for that.”
And she was particularly firm about the suggestion that Kaya had been abandoned.
“She in no way feels abandoned — and that’s something that I’ve made sure to stay on top of and be very aware of.”
Hayden also said the idea that she had simply given up her daughter was deeply painful.
“The idea that anybody would think that I would just give away my child and be okay with it is heartbreaking.”
Her parents are now left to face an unimaginable loss
Now, following Hayden’s sudden death, attention has naturally turned to the family who stood beside her throughout her life — especially her parents, who supported her from the beginning of her Hollywood career.
Hayden was born to Lesley R. Vogel, a former daytime soap opera actress, and Alan Lee “Skip” Panettiere, who served as a captain with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). While Hayden remained close to her parents during many difficult periods in her life, her family relationships were not always straightforward.

Her parents eventually divorced, and Men’s Journal has previously reported that Hayden had a complicated relationship with her mother, Lesley. Her father also made headlines years ago.
In 2008, The New York Daily News reported that Skip, then 49 and a retired New York City firefighter, had been arrested following an alleged domestic dispute involving Lesley at their California home.
Inside her relationship with her dad
According to the report, Skip was accused of punching his wife with a closed fist during an argument. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore confirmed that alcohol had been involved.
“The victim was struck three times,” Whitmore told The Daily News. “I can confirm that alcohol was involved in the incident.”
The reported confrontation happened around 3 a.m., after the couple had attended a benefit dinner for their daughter, Hayden.
Despite the difficulties within her family, Hayden continued to speak warmly about her relationship with her father. In an interview with Us Weekly, she said:

“My dad and I have a great relationship. I actually went and lived with him and my step mom for a while, where I was born and raised in Rockland County, and felt like being at home regrounded me. Being around family reminded me of who I am at my core.”
Following Hayden’s death on August 16, her father, Skip, issued a heartbreaking statement asking for privacy as the family grieves.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”
Hayden Panettiere cause of death
The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.
According to the coroner’s office, first responders were called to a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, after Panettiere was found “unresponsive” and in cardiac arrest. Emergency personnel “initiated advanced cardiac life support measures,” but their efforts were unsuccessful. She was “pronounced deceased at 2:32 PM.”
An autopsy was completed the following day. Officials said “no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death.”
However, her official cause and manner of death “remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies,” according to the coroner’s office.
Officials also said Panettiere had been “temporarily staying” at the residence and that the coroner’s office and Greenville City Police Department had “initiated a parallel investigation” into her death.
