Mom-to-be goes viral for nesting party instead of baby shower, asks friends to clean her house

A new trend is starting to take the place of the centuries-old tradition of the baby shower, where women gather to shower a mom-to-be with a mountainous pile of baby gifts.

Recently, a woman went viral after posting a TikTok video where she explains she’s forgoing a baby shower in favor of a “nesting party,” which involves friends and family cleaning and organizing the home, making it more comfortable for the baby’s arrival.

Preparing for the birth of her third child, Nia Lui decided to switch things up by ditching the common baby shower. Instead of having an event where guests spoil the mom-to-be with gifts and games, she chose to have a nesting party, an event where family and friends come and carry out useful tasks, like deep-cleaning the home or preparing the nursery for the baby’s arrival.

Sharing details of her planned event on TikTok, Nia, 31, captioned the post, “Nesting party here we come. Highly recommend this over a baby shower.”

In the clip, she says she doesn’t like baby showers, nor does she like being the center of attention, and she really doesn’t like “playing dumb games.”

She goes on to explain the celebration is about helping her prepare for pre-labor “nesting,” and she’s asked each of her 12 guests to bring “a freezer meal for me, and either diapers or wipes.”

The TikTok video, that’s been viewed more than 500,000 times, piqued the curiosity of the online audience, many whom had never heard of a nesting party.

One user writes, “This is the village we all need…” while a second gushes over the brilliant idea: “This is an amazing idea!! Freezer meals [and] cleaning!! I would have loved this cuz I felt so unprepared!”

A third says, “That’s a genius idea. In my next pregnancy I will do a nesting party and tell my guests I want [frozen] prep meals.”

Weeks later, after her baby was born, Nia shared a new post on TikTok that’s gathered the interest of more than one million users.

The clip shows her family and friends doing some work around the home that a woman with a large baby bump would find difficult.

“So I had my nesting party last night instead of a baby shower and it was amazing. My friend Bree organized it. I sent her a list of things that I wanted to get done before baby came and she made little cards for each person to take to take on a section of the house.”

As for Nia, she also shared how she spent the party. “I kind of took on more of a supervisory role kind of telling people where I wanted things and what I wanted to do with things. Then we took a dinner break, ate some soup, some sourdough bread and treats, and just chatted about this baby and how it’s going to be.”

When the party concluded, Nia said she was really happy with how it turned out.

“Everything was so clean and organized, and I feel so much more ready for this baby. And everyone brought freezer meals for me for postpartum and it was so much fun. I highly recommend the nesting party if you’re getting ready for a baby.”

Netizens praised the mother of three for holding a practical event where there were no “dumb games” involved.

“I refuse to go to baby showers but I would show up early for a nesting party,” writes one.

Replying to @Haley Sheppard Every pregnant mom needs a nesting party. If you’re pregnant and don’t want a baby shower, do this. If you have a pregnant friend, do this for them! #nestingparty #nestingmom #nestingmode #pregnantmom #pregnancy #babyshower #nestingmama #thirdtrimester #ittakesavillage #myvillage @Bri Welcker

Another says, “I’m sorry but how has this not been a thing FOREVER?! I would absolutely go help alllll my pregnant friends. And wish I could have had one.”

A third shares, “this is absolutely amazing. I hope you know just how blessed you are to have people in your life willing to give their time to help you out,” to which Nia responded, “Oh I know. I feel so blessed that I have so much support!”
