Oprah Winfrey is helping those affected by the raging wildfires on Maui.
The former talk show host was seen handing out supplies at the War Memorial Stadium in Maui, which has been turned into an evacuation shelter for residents.
The wildfires broke out Tuesday night and have since displaced thousands of residents, nearly destroyed the historic town of Lahaina, and as of Thursday night killed 55 people.
On Thursday, Winfrey, 69, who is a part time resident of Maui, was spotted at a shelter assisting those who escaped from the devastating fires.
“It’s a little overwhelming, you know,” Winfrey told the BBC. “But I’m really so pleased to have so many people, you know, supporting, and people are just bringing what they can and doing what they can.”
“I came earlier, just to see what people needed, and then went shopping because often you make donations of clothes or whatever, and it’s not really what people need,” she continued.
“So I actually went to Walmart and Costco and got pillows, shampoo, diapers, sheets, pillowcases.”
Winfrey isn’t the only celebrity using their name to help those affected by the fires.
TMZ reported Floyd Mayweather paid for nearly 70 families to fly from Maui to Honolulu. Not only did the professional boxer help the families get to safety, but he made sure they had a place to stay, something to eat, and clothes to wear.
He reportedly paid for several weeks at hotels for the families and is working with H&M to provide them with clothing.
What’s happening on Maui is devastating. While the destruction of property is awful, it’s absolutely horrific how dozens of people lost their lives.
