Harry’s tell-all memoir Spare has been the talk of the town among royal fans for months.
Since the confirmation that he was indeed writing a book, Harry and Meghan have not exactly been keeping a low profile. In December, the couple dropped their Netflix series, revealing several new things about their life as royals.
More recently, just days before his book’s release, Harry shared even more candid revelations, discussing, amongst other things, the death of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.
Harry and Meghan were in the UK at the time of the Queen’s passing. However, Meghan wasn’t invited to Balmoral when the family gathered on the day of Her Majesty’s passing. Instead, Harry traveled to the Scottish estate alone. As was the case his brother, Prince William, he arrived after she had passed.
In a new interview with 60 Minutes, the prince revealed his side of what really happened on the day that the Queen passed away. Not only that, but he also claimed he was offered time alone with his beloved grandmother after her death.
With the two of them in the same room, he whispered a very particular thing to her.
2022 became one of the British Royal Family’s most eventful years in modern history. The year started with celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, marking her 70 years on the throne. However, as months passed, the joy became sorrow – and, later on, even anger.
In September 2022, Queen Elizabeth sadly passed away. The whole world mourned the beloved monarch, and the funeral for the Queen was held about a week after her passing. It was watched by 28 million viewers in the UK alone, while millions more followed from around the world.
Queen Elizabeth – funeral
After the State Funeral at Westminster Abbey, Queen Elizabeth’s coffin traveled through the streets of London to Wellington Arch in Procession. From Wellington Arch, the coffin went to Windsor, and once there, the hearse continued in Procession to St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, via the Long Walk. At St George’s Chapel, another funeral service was held.
The Choir of St George’s Chapel sang during the funeral service at St George’s Chapel. Then, before the “final Hymn,” Queen Elizabeth’s imperial state crown, the Orb, and the Sceptre were removed from her coffin and placed on the altar.
Next, King Charles put his mother’s Company Camp Colour of the Grenadier Guards on her casket before The Lord Chamberlain broke his Wand of Office and placed it down.
As her Majesty’s coffin was lowered into the Royal Vault, the guests sang God Save The King. Charles grew visibly emotional, fighting back the tears. Later on Monday evening, a small, private burial service was held without cameras and with only the closest family members in attendance.

The Queen now rests in the King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle, alongside her parents and sister Princess Margaret. But also alongside her husband.
After his passing, Philip’s coffin was placed in the royal vault below St. George’s Chapel. Then, he was relocated and lain with the Queen at the King George VI Memorial Chapel, where, some weeks after the funeral, people were once again invited to pay their respects.
Harry didn’t make it to Balmoral before Queen Elizabeth passed away
For weeks after the funeral, circumstances surrounding Queen Elizabeth’s cause of death were largely kept a secret. The Daily Mail reported that a Scottish government department had been accused of being secretive and blocking legitimate attempts to obtain a copy of Her Majesty’s death certificate – this despite the fact many believed it should be a matter of public record.
“Despite MailOnline and other media outlets attempting to obtain the information from the National Records of Scotland (NRS), the public body has blocked its staff from providing any details relating to the Queen’s death on September 8,” the Daily Mail wrote at the time.
In late September, the registered cause of death was released. Queen Elizabeth’s cause of death was “old age,” without adding any further details.
The National Records of Scotland’s Chief Executive, Paul Lowe, confirmed that her passing was registered in Aberdeenshire on September 16.
The document – signed by the Queen’s daughter, Princess Anne – states that Her Majesty passed away at 3.10 P.M. on September 8 at Balmoral Castle. Buckingham Palace announced Queen Elizabeth’s passing around three hours after she died.
King Charles and Camilla were at the Queen’s side when she passed. But, unfortunately, neither William, Kate, nor Harry made it to Balmoral to say their goodbyes before she died.
Harry release tell-all book ‘Spare’
Though the Queen herself was, of course, the focal point, her funeral was to some degree overshadowed by the ongoing feud between Harry & Meghan and the rest of the Royal Family. The Sussexes no longer want anything to do with royal life, and after leaving their duties in the UK, the couple caused widespread controversy when they sat down to do an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Reports about Harry’s relationship with his brother, William, and father, Charles, have surfaced for months. Some wonder if the once-strong bond between William and Harry can ever be repaired. Others speculate that Harry and Meghan won’t be invited to King Charles’ coronation in May.
Other reports claim that Harry and Meghan will be allowed to attend the coronation, though only time will tell.
No matter what, things have certainly not gotten better with the release of Harry’s memoir, Spare. The book has been one of the main talking points of the last months, but there have been other potential problems for the Royal Family to consider as well. In December, the couple’s Netflix documentary series aired, revealing several new things about their life within the royal sphere.
The Royal Family chose not to comment on the Netflix series. King Charles, moreover, didn’t mention anything about rifts in his Christmas speech, which was his first Christmas address to the nation following the Queen’s passing.
Standing in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, where his mother is laid to rest, Charles thanked all those who supported the royals during the challenging time.
“I am reminded of the deeply touching letters, cards, and messages which so many of you have sent my wife and myself and I cannot thank you enough for the love and sympathy you have shown our whole family,” King Charles said.

“Christmas is a particularly poignant time for all of us who have lost loved ones. We feel their absence at every familiar turn of the season and remember them in each cherished tradition.”
The King continued by saying that the Queen’s belief in “the power of light” was an “essential part” of her faith. But also her faith in people, which Charles said he shares with his “whole heart.”
“This is the essence of our community and the very foundation of our society,” he added. “We see it in the selfless dedication of our armed forces and emergency services who work tirelessly to keep us all safe and who performed so magnificently as we mourned the passing of our late Queen.”

As reported by the Guardian, Princess Anne was already with her mother on the morning on September 8. Charles arrived at around 10.30 a.m., while Camilla – who was at nearby Birkhall – was driven to Balmoral to join her husband, Anne, and the Queen.
The Palace released a statement at 12.32 P.M. that the Queen’s doctors were “concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision.” About two hours later, a plane with passengers Prince William, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, departed from RAF Northolt outside of London.
They were spotted driving into the Scottish estate at around 5.05 p.m. We know now that the Queen had already passed away by this time.
Harry recalls day of Queen Elizabeth’s passing
As mentioned, Harry and Meghan were in the UK at the time, and were notified as to the Queen’s health.
In an interview with 60 Minutes which aired on Sunday, Harry gave more details about the tumultuous hours surrounding his grandmother’s passing. He claimed that he reached out to his brother William regarding traveling plans for Balmoral – but was not invited.
“I asked my brother — I said, ‘What are your plans? How are you and Kate getting up there?’ And then, a couple of hours later, you know, all of the family members that live within the Windsor and Ascot area were jumping on a plane together,” Harry told Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes.
The flight to Balmoral was, of course, very emotional for Harry. Most of the flight to the Scottish estate, where he’d spend many Christmases and other holidays, he thought about the last moments he had spoken to his beloved grandmother.
Harry, via the BBC website, found out that the Queen had passed away as he landed. Upon arrival at Balmoral, Princess Anne was the one who welcomed him.
“I walked into the hall and [Princess Anne] was there to greet me,” Harry told 60 Minutes. “And she asked me if I wanted to see her. I thought about it for about five seconds, thinking, ‘Is this a good idea?’ And I was, like, ‘You know what? You can do this. You need to say goodbye.’ So went upstairs, took my jacket off and walked in and just spent some time with her alone.”
Harry spent time alone with Queen Elizabeth after her passing
Harry continued: “She was in her bedroom. [She] was actually — I was really happy for her. Because she’d finished life. She’d completed life, and her husband [Prince Philip] was waiting for her. And the two of them are buried together.”
In his memoir, Harry wrote more about getting to say his last goodbyes to the Queen.
“I stayed in one place without moving, gazing at her for a long time, gathered strength and continued going forward,” Harry recalled in his book.
Moreover, Harry added that he whispered a very precious thing to her;
“I hoped she was happy and that she was with grandpa,” he whispered to the Queen, telling her how he “admired her for having carried out her functions to the end… the Jubilee, welcoming the new Prime Minister.”

While Harry – just like the rest of the Royal Family and millions worldwide – was in mourning over the Queen, he also had to field an infuriating call.
In his memoir, Harry claims that his father, King Charles, told him that it was not fitting that Meghan Markle joined the family at Balmoral.
Charles didn’t want Meghan at Balmoral, Harry claims
“Then my father called again. He told me I was welcome at Balmoral, but… without her,” Harry wrote. “He started to explain his reasons, but they didn’t make any sense at all, and it was disrespectful as well. I did not tolerate it from him.”
Harry claimed that he had told his father: “Don’t even think about talking about my wife like that.”
“Repentant, he said, stammering, that he simply didn’t want the place to be full of people. Nobody’s wife was going to go, not even Kate, he told me, so Meg shouldn’t either,” Harry recalled Charles saying.
