Just days before taking his own life, Breaking Bad star RJ Mitte, 34, shared a hopeful final message filled with excitement for the future, never hinting that tragedy was just around the corner.
Long before RJ Mitte became a familiar face to millions of television viewers, his first audition in Hollywood involved a warning about the dangers of methamphetamine – an experience that would take on an unexpected significance when he landed his breakthrough role.
“My very first audition I ever did in Los Angeles was a PSA for the state of California. It was an anti-meth commercial,” Mitte explained on the Joe Vulpis Podcast, where he reflected on his early career and the television series that changed his life.
Years later, he would find himself auditioning for Breaking Bad, the acclaimed AMC drama about a chemistry teacher who turns to manufacturing meth after receiving a cancer diagnosis.
“Fast forward to auditioning for Breaking Bad, which is still, in my opinion, an anti-meth thing because it doesn’t end well for anyone,” he joked on the Oct. 5 podcast.
RJ Mitte dies at 34
Just one week after that interview, Mitte, 34, was found dead in his Brownsville, Texas, home.
According to People, police responded to a call shortly before 1 p.m. on Oct.12 and found the actor unresponsive.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte,” his representative said in a statement, confirming he died by suicide.
As family, friends and fans mourn his death, Mitte was remembered not only for his acting but also for his commitment to disability rights, a cause deeply connected to his own life.
Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age 3, a condition affecting movement and coordination. His personal experience later helped shape his portrayal of Walter “Flynn” White Jr. in Breaking Bad, a character who also lived with the condition.
The role would change his career and give him a platform to advocate for people with disabilities, including through his work with United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s.
‘It really felt real’
Mitte appeared over all five seasons of Breaking Bad, which aired from 2008 to 2013, playing a young man struggling to understand how his father had become the criminal known as “Heisenberg.”
“He’s been stained by this reputation of Heisenberg. And it’s like I don’t know who Heisenberg is,” he told Vulpis. “Who are who? Wait, that’s my dad.”
During his final podcast interview, the actor reflected on the emotional demands of the role, particularly the parallel between him and Walter Jr.
“It really felt real – playing this character and getting into the groove with this character,” he said, recalling that during auditions, they passed him “these crutches.”
Mitte also discussed the difficulty of watching his own performances, admitting that he could become consumed by thoughts about things he might have done differently.
“I dwell in it. I’m someone that when I mess up or like something happens, I dwell and I spiral. Where it’s like, what could I have done differently? How could I have done that differently?” Mitte told the host.
“You can’t dwell in the darkness – you can’t,” the Guardians of Justice star added.
His career continued after the series ended, with appearances in other television productions and independent films, including Talking to Strangers.
And it was that project that was featured in his final messages to fans.
RJ Mitte’s final social media post
Shortly before his death, Mitte shared an upbeat message on Facebook, celebrating the Los Angeles premiere of Talking to Strangers, where he plays a character who he described as a “reclusive gentleman.”
“Had the pleasure of attending the LA premiere for a film I made, Talking to Strangers, The Movie, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video,” he wrote, adding, “It’s got a little love, some comedy, and maybe even some drama. Go check it out!”
The message offered a glimpse of Mitte’s continued enthusiasm for his work, making the news of his death particularly difficult for fans who had followed his career since Breaking Bad.
