A lot of people tend to plug in their phone to charge when they are going to sleep so they can wake up to a fully charged device. However, it seems that Apple has some warnings it wants its users to heed.

They have issued a warning for users who tend to plug in their phone to charge overnight. They want users to focus on where and how they charge their phones when they are planning to leave it plugged in overnight.

Apple urges users to not charge their iPhone in place where there is no proper ventilation. This means that charging near duvets or blankets might not be a good idea.

The warning shows up in the Important safety information for iPhone’ memo for Apple. It explains to users that a covered or poorly ventilated device can lead to not only discomfort but also possible injury.

It also warns the user about prolonged skin contact with the charging cable and connector when the charging cable is connected to a power source because it may cause discomfort or injury’.

It also says, “Sleeping or sitting on the charging cable or connector should be avoided.”

Apple stresses, “Use common sense to avoid situations where your skin is in contact with a device, its power adapter, or a wireless charger when it’s operating or connected to a power source for long periods of time.

“For example, don’t sleep on a device, power adapter, or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow, or your body, when it’s connected to a power source.”

They urge users to make sure the environment their iPhone is in is well ventilated to avoid any issues or potential dangers, “Take special care if you have a physical condition that affects your ability to detect heat against the body.”

While this can often sound like companies being over-cautious to avoid litigation, it seems like the danger is often very real.

A firefighter from Kent Fire Rescue, made a TikTok video about this very issue and why overcharging or charging your phone over night might be a bad idea.

They said, “We get a lot of questions here at Kent Fire Rescue about why you shouldn’t charge phones overnight. So here are the reasons why.!

He added, “Number one: you can’t smell anything when you’re asleep, so if it starts to burn, the fire won’t wake you up.

“Number two: it only takes three breaths, right, to knock you unconscious.”

He also added another warning saying, “Number three: lots of people have cheap or faulty phone chargers, or even genuine ones have been known start fires.”

All in all, it is best to adhere to safety advice given by a manufacturer. Share this with others so they can also be aware of this.
