Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter joins Willie Nelson’s son for chill-inducing tribute performance to late grandma

Loretta Lynn’s death has undoubtedly left a big hole in the hearts of a lot of country music fans. And of course, her family is perhaps feeling the loss of Lynn even more acutely than her fans!

Her granddaughter has followed in her grandmother’s footsteps with a career in country music, and her latest tribute performance for the late country legend gave everyone the chills!

Emmy Russell followed in her grandmother’s footsteps and pursued a career in music; something that is not easy to do! So it was fitting that once her grandmother passed away, she paid tribute to the great woman who perhaps paved the way for her granddaughter’s career as well.

The recent celebration and tribute to Loretta Lynn was CMT’s Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Loretta Lynn. It aired live from the Grand Ole Opry House, a historical event space for a lot of country singers.

Before Emmy Russell took the stage to sing in tribute to her late grandmother, she said a few words to tell the crowd what her grandma had meant to her. She said, “She always stood in the corner and called me on stage. I’d sing a song — one original and one that everybody knew”.

She said to the packed venue, “It’s the first time that she’s not here to look at me with her proud eyes. It’s just special. Thank you for listening.”

She did not sing alone, she was joined by Lukas Nelson. And if that name sounds familiar, it’s because he is Willie Nelson’s son. Willie Nelson and Loretta Lynn are both country music greats and were close friends of one another.

Despite their close bond, the two collaborated professionally in 2016, singing “Lay Me Down,” a song featured on Lynn’s album Full Circle.

Of course, the duo sang the very same song as a tribute to Lynn. Lukas Nelson and Emmy Russell had chosen a very fitting song to sing for her late grandmother. The song’s lyrics talk about living a long and fulfilling life.

“When they lay me down someday/ My soul will rise and fly away,” Russell and Nelson sang. “This ol’ world will turn around/ I’ll be at peace when they lay me down,” the lyrics of the song say.

What a beautiful tribute to the late Loretta Lynn by the next generation of country music singers! It is amazing how they honor and remember her work.
