A 28-year-old New York man died in his father’s arms after being stabbed in what authorities have described as a deadly encounter with a longtime acquaintance.
Robert “Bobby” Carragher was fatally stabbed while sleeping at a home in Massapequa, according to reports from CBS News and other outlets. Family members later identified him as the victim.
Police say the incident happened around 1:30 a.m. Monday. During a news conference Tuesday, Nassau County Police Detective Lt. George Darienzo said Carragher was asleep in bed when he was stabbed in the neck.
According to investigators, Carragher and 22-year-old Kristin Sculley had known each other for several years and had spent time together at a bar before returning to Carragher’s home.
“We believe that this female individual made an arrangement. She was an acquaintance of our victim, who made an arrangement to get together that evening,” Darienzo said, according to VT.
He added: “We believe the suspect in this case became angry towards our victim.”
After being stabbed, Carragher managed to make his way upstairs, police said. His cries for help awakened his parents, who rushed to assist him and attempted to stop the bleeding.
Describing the scene, Darienzo said: “He climbed the stairs to seek the assistance of his mother, screaming. His mother and father came to his aid.”
“They attempted to control that bleeding in the kitchen. At that point, their son became unresponsive.”
“He died in his father’s arms”
Darienzo later told reporters, according to News 12: “He died in his father’s arms. No family should ever have to bear witness to their son being killed in that manner.”
Authorities said Sculley was found hiding inside the home and was taken into custody. Police also recovered a pocketknife that investigators believe may have been used in the stabbing.
Sculley pleaded not guilty during her arraignment on Tuesday, June 2, and remains in custody, according to ABC 7.
Friends and loved ones have since remembered Carragher for the impact he had on those around him.
“There’s not much you can say. An innocent life was taken. Bobby lit up every room he walked into,” friend Louis Ambrosio told ABC 7.
Meanwhile, Sculley’s attorney, Mindy Plotkin, told Newsday that self-defense could become a factor in the case.
“I think self-defense is something that definitely has to be looked into in this case,” Plotkin said, according to VT.
