Mayim Bialik has opened up about a health ordeal she described as a “nightmare” after trying a GLP-1 medication that several doctors believed could help with her long-standing medical issues.

In a candid essay for The Free Press titled My GLP-1 Nightmare, published on June 5, Mayim Bialik explained that years of autoimmune conditions and inflammation led her to consider the increasingly popular treatment. But after taking a single injection, she said she experienced severe side effects that quickly convinced her to stop.
The Big Bang Theory star revealed that she has spent years managing Graves’ disease, Sjögren’s syndrome, dysautonomia, connective tissue disease, and mast cell activation syndrome. According to Bialik, three different doctors suggested a GLP-1 medication after emerging research showed the drugs may help reduce inflammation associated with autoimmune disorders.
Although the medications have become famous for their weight-loss effects, Bialik stressed that shedding pounds was never her primary motivation.
The actress recalled growing up without concerns about her appearance before gaining weight after taking mood medication as a teenager. She later struggled with body image and said early menopause added another 20 pounds she found difficult to lose.

Still, she hoped the medication might provide relief from some of her symptoms.
“Maybe this could be the magic cure,” she wrote.
Instead, Bialik said the experience turned into a disaster.
“To say I had an adverse reaction would be somewhat of an understatement,” she wrote.
The actress described suffering from “explosive, uncontrollable diarrhea,” violent sulfur burps, bloating, cramping, flu-like body aches, and repeated sneezing attacks every time she attempted to eat or drink.
She said the symptoms became so severe that she was unable to keep down even small amounts of water and admitted she failed to make it to the bathroom several times.
According to Bialik, her doctor warned that because GLP-1 medications have a long half-life, the side effects could linger for days.
Eventually, she sought help from a gastroenterologist, who reassured her that she was not imagining the reaction.
“A real doctor confirming I was not a freak, that the medication really had done this to me,” she wrote.
The specialist reportedly explained that GLP-1 drugs can be extremely disruptive to the body and are best reserved for specific cases involving severe obesity and related complications.
During the appointment, Bialik said she had an unexpected realization when she looked at herself in a mirror and noticed that some of the physical insecurities she had been obsessing over seemed less important.

Despite seeing changes in her appearance, she said the experience only reinforced her decision not to continue treatment.
While many patients have reported life-changing results, doctors have repeatedly stressed that responses can vary dramatically from person to person.
“GLP-1s have helped people in serious need. Of that I am certain,” Bialik wrote.
“But nobody talks much about what happens when it goes wrong.”
